Hamburg

There is a bit of a toss up on the exact origin of this breed. According to Craig Russell, a...
Pros: they appear lively hearty
Cons: n/a
All I know is they are a must for me. I want some so please contact me
Pros: Beautiful, very Smart, Get along with other breeds, Can Live with Bantams,
Cons: Non-Consistant egg layer, not cold hardy, susceptible to illnesses
I currently own 7 hens and 3 roosters! They all live in a nice coop with other breeds! They are very nice and pretty birds and a lot of people are amazed by their feathers and their colors. I originally bought 4 (1 roo and 3 hens) from a breeder who just happened to have a few of them. I bought them and brought them home. They all laid an egg on the way home. The cage got opened and they all got out, They are very agile birds and I had to catch them. Once I got all 4 back into the coop, they seemed to get along with my buff orpington, ancona, silver pheonix's, and some other breeds. I then gathered some of their eggs and hatched them. i got 10 out of 11 to hatch (on my birthday even better) I then raised those and some died, some lived, I sold them all to a person at a swap thing, He raised them up and I just bought them back a couple of days ago. I am very happy to have all the babies of my chickens and I have 3 more in the incubator, This breed, you just have to know what you are doing with them before you get them!! They are a very fun breed though!
Pros: very smart
Cons: too independent
this hen was very smart. but she was a very good flyer and very independent. she also become almost outcasted from the rest of the flock. endend up roosting in a tree for a little over a week before she got eaten
Pros: A beautiful look
Cons: can't go with larger birds.
I have a rooster and a hen but I can't put them in with my barred rocks because the hen will hide any where she can and the larger hens like to pick on the rooster, but on their own the do great so I plan on getting more.
i want one!! reminds me of a leghorn with spots. i love my leghorn's silly personality. i wonder how they would get along?
Pros: lots of eggs, interesting appearance, alert
Cons: small eggs, can be very skittish, fly a bit too well
The smallest of my birds they were the most "nasty" to the other birds in the brooder, continuing until
the other breeds grew significantly larger. As of now they are all 9 months old. They are not friendly and don't get underfoot. Over time they are getting closer to me as I go out into the yard. They were the first to "escape" to neighboring yards, and at that point were too stupid to return the way they left, ie flying, and would fun along the fence cackling in dismay as the little flock moved to another part of the yard. They are flighty but not interested in getting away. Over the last two weeks they have figured out how to fly back home so my life is a bit simpler. The one snowfall we had was 4" a few weeks back, it has been a very mild winter, anyhow that morning when I opened the coop nobody ran out in the snow. A half hour later I looked out the window and saw the two Hamburgs strolling back towards the house across the lawn. The snow was deeper than their legs and snowing was falling on their heads and they they looked quite comfortable and undisturbed by the whole affair.
They fly well, perhaps too well, I saw mine blast over ten feet high while clearing a six foot fence getting away from a dog. But they are homebodies and generally the first to climb into the coop at night. Since they are my only flighty breed and the rest stay in the yard they don't go far. They are attractive and regular layers though the eggs are presently peewee to small, that may change as they get older and days get longer and warmer, I don't know since these are my first birds.
I wouldn't keep this breed in a run, confinement seems to make them nastier. They seem at home with room enough to fly a bit, scratch around a lot. They are the ones still out scratching when the rain picks up enough to send the others back to the run.
Pros: very easy to look after and very beautiful
Cons: mine is a bit flighty but she is getting friendlier
I love hamburgs
my one is named NIKI and she is very beautiful
it was very sad because i got them of a friend who had more but they got eaten by snakes, so they made the hard decision of letting her come to me

Pros: Great forager, consistant layer
Cons: Smaller Bird
I hatched one out with my speck. Sussex, and Wyandotte's last year it was an extra egg the breeder threw in and honestly I would not have hatched it if my daughters did not demand I put it in the incubater. She has quickly become my favorite out of my flock of 20 she is one of the better layers usualy laying 6 medium eggs per week. Her egg size is a little smaller then the others but she is half the size of the other girls to so she eats alot less. She is a better watch chicken then the three roosters I have she is always the first to alert if a strange dog or hawk is in the area. She can fly really well and she will if threatened I lost about 4 chickens to hawks last summer and so far she has survived. I will definately be adding more Hamburgs to my flock this year. I was a little worried that being smaller then her flock mates she would get picked on but so far she is doing fine she is spunky enough to hold her place in the pecking order and not get pushed around. She is not the type of chicken that is under foot wanting to be picked up but that is fine with me.
cool
Pros: nice coloring, alert, good foragers, good feed to egg conversion
Cons: flighty, loud, very fast, small eggs
I have silver hamburgs and, although they are are fine looking birds, they are too easily spooked, too flighty, and too skittish for my tastes. Being small and fast, they are good foragers and do not eat much feed, but their eggs are small and they are not great layers. They seem best and happiest in a free range situation, and it is a pleasure for me to see them running in the yard with their wings outspread, squawking with joy.
Pros: Attractive, very pretty in the field.
Cons: Flighty
I keep Silvers just for their ornamental value...they are just fun to have around. Can be flighty.
Pros: Good layer of white eggs, excellent forager, good feed converstion, great personality, like to "play"
Cons: Loudly marked so prone to predation, not for meat with their size
One of the silliest breeds I have ever had, if you like breeds with personality. Cute white eggs, good size once they get going. Mine average 5 eggs a week in winter. Cold hardy with the comb type. Great fliers, so will need a roofed pen or clipped wings. Friendly and calm but can be bossy and loud.

Their coloring makes them hawk bait but they're good about paying attention to their surroundings, nice and alert without being flighty.
