Langshan

The Black Langshan originated in China where it is thought to have been made a pure breed. ...
Pros: Broody, Great Layer, Not Aggressive
Cons: Hatchery birds can't compare
I purchased my first pair of Langshans from Forrest Beauford in Claremore, OK. From that date, I have never wanted any other breed. They can and will be ferocious broodies, lay eggs better than any other Asiatic breed I have had and the males are never aggressive unless a hen sounds an alarm. The eggs are large and can vary from light cream to a very dark brown. They do well in confinement. Birds from a hatchery cannot compare to a bird from a quality breeder. You will not get the size or temperament that a bred-to-standard bird has.

I now have blues, blacks and whites in Largefowl and blues, blacks and whites in bantams. Feel free to PM or email me for any information that you need about this wonderful breed!

Pros: So sweet, pretty, fluffy, and AMAZING!
Cons: Develop slower, a little jumpy
I love my baby Happy Feet! She's my fluffy little girl! Yes she developed slower, but it just makes her all the more innocent :) She's super sweet and a little jumpy, she lets me hold her and pet her but when I put her down she's eager to wiggle and jump out LOL! Love her!!!
Pros: Good mothers, stomps snakes, great colour, cold-hardy
I have one of these and he's awesome! He stomped a garter snake in the yard! I love his nice even blue colour. His name is Cobra King. He's SOOOOO awesome!

Pros: Decent layer
Beautiful
Puppy dog personality
Very sweet (gentle giant)
Cons: None
We have one black Langshan and she is definitely by far my favorite. She is very large at least 10-12lbs, but she is so nice to all the other hens and never bullies them even though shes the biggest. Very loud and vocal about getting what she wants when she wants. Has to be hand fed because the stuff on the ground is not good enough lol. (someones been very spoiled) She lays a medium sized light to dark brown egg 3-4 times a week. Never gone broody, but that's okay with me. Will follow me around looking for handouts and always comes running as soon as I call her. I would recommend this breed to anyone and am looking forward to getting a few chicks out of her sometime soon.

Pros: Vary sweet & People Friendly,Lays Large Brown Eggs,Hens make grate moms,Roos are Grate at protecting their Hens
Cons: Roos can sometimes be to over protecktive

Vary sweet & People Friendly,Lays Large Brown Eggs,& I hear the Hens make Grate Moms still waiting to find that one. Roos are Grate at protecting their Hens;
idunno.gif
the down side is some times their to good at protecting & if they see you slacking off on your duties or walk in the wrong stance or scare their hens they will try you on for size,I find using a shepherds staff works grate,It keeps them at bay at a long distance & wont do major damage when you get them with it;But enough to get the point across.Other than that I have nothing bad to say about them.

I love my Langshans & would recommend them to any buddy!

Pros: lets the rhode island eat first, very kind
Cons: STUPID,attacks me,does the''SIDE SUFFLE'',Shouts alot
Even though he's annoying in the morning he is a gentle kind little thing.
He gets scared if my kids jump and of the squirrel's sounds and certain clothes.
The side shuffle is when he first runs side way and jump and scratch you.

Pros: calm, watchful, easy to handle, people lover
Cons: none
Ours is a white Langshan roo - he's a fantastic rooster, but it took him a long time to mature mentally....his "teenage" days seemed a little long. Has always been gentle with us and the girls. Despite his huge size, he's a capable runner and can jump quite high. Gentle giant.
Pros: Friendly
Inquisitive
Easily handled
Cons: Escape artist
Loner
Late layer
Zelda is the only Langshan in my flock (she is a pretty Blue Langshan). She is the only chicken out of my flock of 8 to frequently escape the run’s 6 foot fence - she loves to fly / jump. With that said, she is one of the 2 easiest chickens to handle/pick up. Zelda voluntarily jumps up onto my back/shoulder and will stay there for a while if allowed to. She readily eats treats from my and my 6 year old’s hands - also lets my 6 year old pick her up with no fuss. She tends to follow us around more and is more curious about what I’m doing than the other chickens.

I have also noticed that she is freeranging by herself 50% of the time the flock is allowed onto the rest of our 1 acre during the day. She just wanders off by herself without a care in the world. Definitely my loner chicken who is 3rd in pecking order - quite surprising that she is not the lowest ranking hen in the flock because she is rather gentle.

She let our broody hen’s chick walk all over her and peck at her waddles as she was laying an egg once - she was friendly towards the chick and always has been in the month that it has been with us. Now she has gone broody herself for the first time ever in the year and a half we’ve had her.

She was a late bloomer in laying eggs though - she was close to a year or a little over a year when she started laying light brown eggs that are decent sized.
Pros: Very beautiful, boys are gentle with hens, nice to people, smart.
Cons: Size could be bad for people who have a setup for small or medium chickens.
I have a black Langshan rooster that was supposed to be an australorp. He is very sweet and gentle with the girls and other roosters. I do not know about laying or broodiness because I only have a boy. He scares people with his intimidating size and dark eyes, but he is a big baby. He is gorgeous with a very deep crow.

Pros: Very pretty, Stately upright stance decent layers
I had to give Langshans 5 stars just because they are a favorite. Normally I would only give them 4 because of them being averge egg layers. I have always raised Whites and their pure white plumage stately upright stance with the slate color shanks have always been very appealing to me. They are not overly friendly but they are not unfriendly at all. They are just kind of indifferent.
Pros: Sweet, Elegant, the Great Dane of the chicken world
Cons: Broody! Get from a reputable line...not a hatchery.
I'm just getting back in to Langshans (thanks Rodriguez Poultry for the re-start!) after about 15 years away from them, but I wanted to share my experiences with the flock I had growing up...(Both times my birds were from the Beuford line.)

They are truly the "Gentle Giant" of the chicken world. I also have Great Danes, and these birds are so similar its not even funny! The roosters get very large and take a while to do so (they'll look goofy until about 2, and then they're stunning!) Hens develop pretty normally and are very distinguished and sweet-but they do get broody! Both sexes will be very large and stand tall (sometimes as tall as a turkey!) so you need to have nesting/roosting situations appropriately sized for them.

My Langshans lived in a mixed flock and never caused any trouble. They were calm and elegant, really the "kings" of my flock. No one messed with them because they were so big. They were kind to people and animals alike, and I did have to worry about predators eating them because they were so friendly. They honestly felt more like dogs because they preferred being with people than the other chickens.

I can't stress enough about getting Langshans from a show line, not a hatchery line. The hatchery Langshans often are more flighty and do not have the same body type or temperament. A well-bred Langshan rooster is one of the most beautiful sights to behold. I can't say enough about how much I love this breed!

Pros: Awesome so far
Cons: none
I hope all of my Langsahn Will be all Hens I just Love them so cute :D  ;)
does anyone know why my hens may have stopped laying they were broody but the chicks are now 15 weeks old but the moms have not began to lay yet, when before they were broody they layed daily, all our other hens are laying
Pros: Broody, excellent mom
Cons: Skittish
I only have one Langshan hen. Mine is extremely skittish, but to be fair I bought her as a pullet and I dont handle her very often. I've had her for about 1 1/2 years now and she is still skittish. She doesn't fight or they to get away if I catch her but she is hard to catch. She will take treats from my hand but runs if move. She also bullies the other hens on occasion. On the other hand, she is terrified of roosters and runs like the wind whenever one looks at her. Weirdly, when she is broody she is friendly. She has hatched and raised chicks for me and was an excellent mother. She goes broody about 3 times a year and is hard to break.
Her best selling points are that she is stunningly beautiful, is a reliable broody, and lays a nice pinkish, large egg 4 to 5 times a week (when not broody).
All in all, I would buy langshan chicks if I had the chance.

Pros: Friendly towards other chickens and people. Pretty.
Cons: Takes longer to mature.
I really loved our Langshan with her deep dark eyes. She was mistakenly sold to me as a Cochin, because of the feathered feet. Later I learned that Cochins have yellow feet and eyes, Langshan's feet and eyes are dark. I love their posture and my pullet made a low honking sort of sound, but very quiet. She bonded with 2 D'uccles and where by each others sides constantly. They can fly over some fences which can make it difficult to keep them off the patio or out of certain areas of the garden you'd rather not be gotten to. A great heritage breed to own and preserve. Let's hope they make it off the endangered list soon! Overall a JOY to have around.

Pros: Gentle and very impressive appearance
Cons: not the best egg and meat birds
I really like the way these birds look. I had some and marveled at their blood read combs and wattles and the contrast with the jet black feathers. The males get large, black sickle feathers that have iridescent highlights. Awesome. I had a cock that had spurs on his legs as big as your ring finger, that would scare you. Tall bird that looked ferocious, but was tame as a "pussy cat". Good show birds, but I wouldn't want a flock for egg or meat production.
Pros: Quite, docile, good layers
Cons: Can't think of any
I love my Langshans. I tried giving them 5 stars, but my ipad will only let me do 4.5. This breed will always be apart of my flock. My langshans are good layers and are very friendly to people (and kids). Mine have not gone broody yet, but I have read that they can. They are perfect for a backyard flock since they are a very quiet bird. Great bird.
Pros: Stately, kind, and quietly in control
Cons: Rare and hard to find (whites)
Langshans are one of our favorite breeds. Large and quiet, the hens are sweetie pies and our roosters have always been the gentler birds in our flocks. We call our roosters hero-birds because they will not back down to predators while other roosters hide and cower. We had our champion Langshan rooster take on a bald eagle that had flown into the coop! Of course he was no match and it was a good thing I ran out there with a broom, waving it in the air, but his courage was commendable.
I just wish I could find quality birds to create a good flock after losing our champion rooster.
They would get a full five stars if there were more birds available to breeders.
Pros: Handsome, mellow, big.
Cons: Kind of a loner, not sure how protective he would be...
My Langshan has become my favorite rooster by far. He is almost a year old, very mellow, and I can't say as I've ever heard him crow. He is by far the most handsome rooster I have had. I like this guy and would give him away before eating him. If I didn't have other chicken objectives (raising Dominiques or Welsummers for the apocalypse) I would seriously consider just raising and breeding Langshans.
