Pullet-Shut Automatic Chicken Door Chickendoors.com

https://chickendoors.com/store/ An 11" wide, 15" tall, all aluminum construction...
Pros: Well built, predator proof, easy to set up and install. Works in coops where there isn't enough space above to install a sliding door.
Cons: None
Door was super easy to install as it fit my opening. All I had to do is drill 4 holes, mount it and hook up the optional solar panel and battery($50). Door is $180 so $230 set up that way. Thought about the photo sensor but it's just as easy and more convenient for us to set the opening and closing time. We have it open at 10 AM so they have a chance to lay eggs in the coop and close at 8:30 PM. They are in the coop at 7:45 so that works so far. When we are home we usually let them out manually before 10 AM. Our coop is a re purposed raised dog kennel so it did not have room above for guillotine style door and I'm glad to have found and purchased this door!

With the roof overhang and the ramp going downwards I have no problem with snow impeding the door. You can also get the door with right hand hinges.
I don't think wind would ever bother this door as it is very sturdily built (O.K., maybe hurricane). You can also adjust how far the door opens to help break the wind in the colder seasons. Say you want to give them a chance to get out but don't want that icy blast on them if they choose to stay in the coop.
The door seals up tight so no little raccoon fingers can get in there to pry it open.

After living with this door on a timer for a few months we added the photo sensor option that opens the door at first light and closes it when it gets dark. Works great. Got tired of changing the timer when our days started to get shorter. I would look out and the door would be open and it was dark. We have lots of coons here and I want that door closed when it gets dark!

Pros: Consitantly opens and closes using the solar panel as energy source. So convenient and easy to use.
Cons: problem with the light sensor, opening in the middle of the night.
I highly recommend this door. The programmable option with magnet works great and is easy to reset when the light begins to change. I've used this door for over two years without any problems other than the light sensor option, that was opening from some other sources of light in the night (possibly car lights). Great customer care as well.

Pros: Easy to install. Can use solar power. Works with sensor for sunrise and sunset. Great customer support. Can open/shut without change to programming.
Cons: None.
Mine is set to sunrise / sunset. I might like to have it open a bit later and close a bit earlier; however, I don't want to program it.

Installs easy. Easy to use. Predator-proof. Attractive. What's not to love?
Repeat Customer!
Pros: Incredibly EASY to install! I am beginner level in all things handy (36 yo woman) and I installed it all within an hour at 7pm at night using my husbands tools.

No need to charge the battery first. Worked immediately upon install.

Customer service is beyond exceptional. Spoke with one of the owners when I called the phone number. Very friendly and helpful! My question was regarding the type of caulk needed to glue solar panel to plywood. Answer- any standard window caulk. I had exterior/interior caulk handy and had worked wonderfully.

YouTube videos available to watch before install. They were very helpful!

Photo sensor is a light gathering device and it works wonderfully!!

100% made in the US!!

Has worked flawlessly for me!
Cons: Not exactly a con, more like a side note… but Comes with one magnet. If you loose it, you must buy another. Personally, I only needed the magnet to set the door timer and for training the chickens to go to their new coop. Otherwise it is kept on the side of our entryway gun safe. I would hate to loose it since it’s the only one I have but customer service is so great- I don’t see getting a replacement being a big issue.
Originally, I pulled the trigger on the purchase because it was 100% made in the USA and install videos seemed incredibly easy. Figured I could do it myself and let the husband tackle other projects on the endless list.

Well, I loved the pullet shut door from in packaging to install, from install to application! I love it so much I have placed my order for a second door to be installed (by me) on our duck house! I enjoyed the process of installation. Needing only a few building tools like an impact drill, drill bit, leveler and my oscillating multi tool to cut a square into the coop wall. It has works fantastic- the solar panel is effective and esthetically pleasing.

Happy happy customer in VA!

Pros: Quick learning by hens to know when to go in, battery operated with solar panel makes for ease of mind even if electricity goes out, photo sensor is exceptional, very easy to install.
Cons: A lot of space is needed on front of coop due to motor.
It took 2 nights for my girls to learn when to go into coop. After 2 nights of getting locked out(with me checking and letting them in) they got the hang of it. Now they don't miss bedtime. Many options that are great to have and it is extremely easy to install. My opinion is it is the best quality for the money compared to other doors.

Pros: Easy to install, well built, no connection to power needed.
Cons: Not an issue for us, but if you coop is out in exposed weather I guess ice and snow could freeze to prevent the door opening, but that would happen with any door.
Shipped fast and it is sturdy and well made. I installed it in about an hour, including reconfiguring the vertical sliding door opening the coop came with. Connecting the battery and solar panel are a breeze. The first night the girls didn't go in on time, I think because they were wary of the new "thing" on their house. I unscrewed the panel and flipped the switch to delay the closing to 30 minutes after sunset, and they have been inside on time since.

We've had it about two weeks. I'll review again after more time.
Pros: Love not having to get up every morning to let out chickens and hurry home at night to let them in
Cons: Only thing I wish it did was stay open slightly longer for the procrastinators.
We like to go out at night for dinner and visit with friends so this door is the answer for so many issues. I don't want to tell my friends, "I'm sorry, I have to hurry home and put my chickens away."
Makes my life so much easier!
I want to give a big thumbs up for the pullet-shut chicken door company. I’ve had my door for 4 years and it works great. I had to disconnect it for a bit bc of a neighbors dog. When I plugged it back in I mistakenly connected the cold wire to the hot. Big mistake on my part! When I called pullet-shut and told them what happened they were still willing to honor the warranty and had my information right at their fingertips. No probing questions, no I’m sorry but we can’t, no phone transfers, just friendly, knowledgeable and patient help. They new exactly what to do. They walked me through opening the circuit board and removing it. The best news is that it will cost less than $40 to fix it. I’m tickled pink. I thought I would need new everything but the actual door. They also have new products...I went ahead and bought a photo sensor so I don’t have to program the door when to open and close. Lol I’m not related to them, don’t work there and I received nothing for this review. Just a good door and wonderful customer service.

Pros: Easy to install, works exactly as described
Installed the door (including the solar cell, photosensor, and cleaning up all the wire runs in the coop) in about an hour. Cut the hole, bolt it into place and connect everything. It really is that simple. To cut the hole in the side of our coop, I traced the opening, drilled some large holes at each inside corner, and then used a jigsaw to cut along the lines and "connect the holes." I mounted the solar cell on a south-facing wall which will get full day's worth of sun.

The chickens won't be in the new coop for another couple of months but I still get a kick out of seeing the door open every morning. The only thing I've run into was the door freezing shut in a recent snow/ice storm. I went out in the morning to see and it was still closed thanks to all the ice. I thawed everything out with some hot water and used the little magnet (included with the kit) to manually open and close the door a few times and it worked just fine. I will probably install a small awning or roof over the door to keep out as much rain and ice as I can before next winter.
Pros: Easy to install... I no longer have to worry about letting the chickens out or locking them up. Great customer service.
Cons: nope
Installing the Pullet-Shut door to my coop was the smartest thing I've done in a long time.

I'm not exactly what you would call a morning person and on weekends there are days when I didn't let my chickens out till "brunch" time. On weekdays there would be times that I didn't make it home to lock them in until way after dark. Being able to automate letting my chickens out in the morning and not having to worry about safely securing them at night has been a huge help... for them as well as for me.

I opted for the PhotoSensor so I wouldn't have to reprogram the door when the days get shorter, as well as the solar panel and battery option because the coop is not near an outlet.

Besides not being a morning person, it would be far fetched to call me a handyman or do-it-yourselfer. Luckily installing this door is idiot proof and requires very few tools... A measuring tape and pencil, a drill with 1/4 bit, a saw, a screwdriver and pliers sufficed nicely. I do always read directions, and suggest you do too. I followed them and in a very short time..... "TA_DAH!!!" the chickens no longer have to wait for me!

The door is very well built and closes very securely. There is simply no way a coyote is getting in through that door. It's like a chicken vault!

A few months down the line I noticed that the door was not opening or shutting all the way. I tested the battery and it was fine. I tested the solar panel too just for good measure and it was putting out voltage. I unplugged and repulgged all the connections, but the door was still not working as it should.

I called the good folks at chickendoors.com. A very nice gentleman ( I wish i could remember his name. Sorry. ) patiently talked me through troubleshooting the problem. He concluded that it must be either the electronics or the motor and quickly sent me out new replacements.

The parts soon arrived and with a little work I was able to remove the old bits and replace them with the new bits. He also included a prepaid envelope to send the old parts back in.

The repair did the trick! My chickens are safe once more and now I can sleep in on weekends.

To sum it up:
~ the Pullet-Shut Automatic Chicken Door is a great product that does what it is supposed to do very well.
~ chickendoors.com is a reputable business with fantastic customer service. They stand behind their product.

cant find one to buy were is the link to buy one
Pros: Reliable
Cons: Drink your caffeine the day you put it in
I installed the door, photo sensor and solar panel last year. Once I got it set up it has worked flawlessly ever since. The only small problem I had was getting the connections to the battery to hold. Took me a bit to understand I had to crimp the metal connectors to make them hold. The photo sensor can easily be repositioned to place it in more sun (opens earlier, closes later) or more shaded (opens later, closes earlier). When we had bitter weather this past winter I sometimes used the magnet to close the door manually to shut the hens in. No problems there, the door resumes it's cycle the next day, opening in the morning. I did make sure to clear ice and snow off the edges of the door when we had the many feet this past winter. I'm in the process of adding a roof to part of the run, this should cut back on possible problems there. Overall I LOVE the door, it's one of the things that convinced me that keeping chickens would work for me
Pros: Easy to install and use
I did alot of research looking at different automatic doors for my chickens. Due to my coyote population around my farm and them hunting later into the mornings in the fall and summer I wanted a door I could program for open times and not just work off of sunrise and sunset. During the winter months I can not let my flock out safely until around 11am vs in the summer they can safely free range after 8:30 am. This door is so easy to change the open and close times with the magnet, just adjust as needed. I purchased the solar panal and have not had any issues with it. Opens and closes daily as I want, no more concerns about not being home at dark to close the chickens up safely. Highly recommend it, really makes leaving my chickens easier, someone only has to check them in the evenings to gather eggs. Well worth the price.

Pros: Easy to install and program.
Cons: Only once it did not open during a bad freeze but they didnt want to come out anyway...too cold :-)
I LOVE this door!! Bought it a couple months ago. Get to sleep in later now and the girls still get out on time

It is dark when I get home from work this time of year and seeing the closed door when I pull in the driveway makes me smile It is expensive but worth every penny in my book!!! So easy to install and program. There is no power at the coop so the solar panel is a great option and has worked with no problems.
Pros: Works in all weather, fairly simple installation
Cons: Programming is a bit confusing at first
I've had this door for about 7 months in 90+ heat and -15 cold. It works as advertised and is reliable. The chickens will stand in front of it to get outdoors in the morning. I would recommend a windbreak/roof for winter months (I'm in Minnesota) to keep out snow and ice.

It can be operated manually, or programmed by time of day or use a photocell. I use the photocell, and haven't had any problems. It comes with a battery backup, but I've disconnected mine in the winter so I can unplug the door and it will stay closed on the bitter cold days.
Pros: 1. Works as advertised. 2. Let's me leave the chickens in the coop knowing they will get out when the sun rises. 3. Very easy to install
Cons: 1. Kind of expensive, but no more than many others I looked at 2. Second chance door doesn't stay open long enough
It has made my life so much easier and I was not loving going out in the rain to let the chickens out. I also leave for work many mornings before the sun is up and come home when it has set in the winter. Now I don't have to worry as much. It also let me go out of town for a few days without having to leave my birds inside the coop the whole time. Another big bonus was how easy it was to install. My carpentry skills are limited and I did it without any help.
Great door-at first….
Pros: Easy install
Cons: Poor design
Expensive parts
Weekly maintenance
Initially this door was GREAT-until it wasn’t.
The bottom corner pivot point gets jammed with debris (chickens do what they do) and the motor keeps trying to close until a) the motor burns up or b) the corner of the door at the pivot point breaks off.
After 3 repairs, more than $300 in repair parts, and being told “well, I guess you need to oil it more often” (supposed to oil corner every 6 months -as labeled on chicken door) I bought a COMPLETELY new chicken door system. I would never recommend the Pullet-shut door to ANYONE.

I'm sorry you had issues. If the bottom hinge is never lubricated, it will eventually bind and break. We recommend putting a drop of oil on it every 6 months but many customers forget and go years without lubrication, it depends on your environment. The motor will sense if there is an obstruction and will stop, so it is not possible for the motor to keep running until it burns out. In fact that has never happened. For the repairs, a new door panel is $50, if the motor is needed it's another $50. I'm not sure how $300 was spent. I notice that the post was done on the first day the account was created, and the user has not logged in since.

Pros: worked flawlessly for 2 years
Cons: can not be repaird - too expensive to replace
I bought one of these as my first flock was growing up. It was a breeze to install. It worked flawlessly for two years. Then it stopped.
I called the company and was told that there are only 2 things that can be fixed and that they STRONGLY recommend I get both "If one fixes it, you're good and you have a spare for when the other breaks... But you're probably going to need both." I did. After 3 afternoons of sitting on a milk crate and fiddling with it - it became clear that the problem was the connector on the end of the replacement wire between the motor and the 'actuator'. I called them back. "Nope" they can not take the defective part back, but I'm welcome to buy another. And - "Nope" they will not guarantee that the 2nd replacement part will either work properly OR fix the problem.
When I asked if I was maybe doing something wrong I was told 'Well, my little daughter can follow the instructions so I guess you should be able to."
Two more afternoons on the milk crate and a PILE of hot glue later and I got the door working.
.... for about 40 days.

Since I have replaced both of the 'only parts that can be replaced' - at a cost of just over $100...
And since I do not want to continue to re-purchase the same parts over and over hoping one of them will work...
I am left with one of two solutions - replace the entire door (every 2 years???) or simply open up the big 'people' door every morning and evening - which leaves my flock exposed for about an hour before dawn and after sunset.

I know that NOTHING lasts forever.
I didn't expect to purchase on door and be set for my entire chicken raising career.
But I expected that it would outlive the first chickens to use it.
