While the names and place of origin are the same, the Rhode Island White is actually a distinctly different breed from the Rhode Island Red.

The Rhode Island White was developed in 1888 by Mr. J. Alonzo Jocoy of Peacedale, Rhode Island. He developed the breed by crossing White Wyandottes with Partridge Cochins and Rose Comb White Leghorns. In 1903, Mr. Jocoy made the breed known to the public and offered individuals for sale. The breed continued to be developed and improved so that it more closely resembled the Rhode Island Red’s brick-like body shape. Fairly popular up until the 1960's it is now considered a uncommon-moderately rare breed.

The breed was admitted into the APA in 1922 and the standard only accepts rose comb Rhode Island White.

The crossing of a Rhode Island Red and a Rhode Island White will result in Red Sex-Link offspring, meaning offspring that can be sexed by down color alone at hatch. Males are white, females are red.

Pros: Very sweet and loves people. Lays everyday.
My little chicken is not very smart, but she is very aware of her surroundings. One time there was a hawk in my yard that none if my chickens noticed it but her.

Pros: Exactly what I want to know and read.
I'd like to know where these hens were purchased so that when I restock my flock I'll know where to get them. Thanks a bunch. I'm from RI so there's nothing better than to find a hen that's on the population downslide and try to give it some life and future.

Pros: Great layers and great meat birds.
Cons: I do not have any negative things to say.
This line of Rhode Island Whites seem to be very gentle and easy going. They are great layers of mostly Ex-large, large and once in a while a medium sized egg. They are truly a dual purpose in every aspect of the word. They are a massive solid bird.

When I dressed out some cockerels at 26 weeks old they came in at an average of 5 pounds. Mine line of Rhode Island Whites are not hatchery birds and are a true Heritage breed bred to the APA Standard for Rose Comb Rhode Island Whites.

If you can find the true Rhode Island White you will love them for their great egg production, meat quality and personality.

Where did you buy your RI White Rosecombs? I'd gladly give up my seven hens (1 year old) to have a flock of these beautiful hens.

I am a breeder of Rhode Island Whites. I have had them for many years. Mine do tend to go broody more than other breeds.

my RIW are great birds they get what they need & are good at it but not aggressive at all , they get along well with all my other 75 hens of several different breeds they are single comb, and lay a large to x large brown egg, at first as they were growing it seems they were eating a lot more then my other breeds did ? food was their first priority always, but now as they turn one year old they are slowing on eating so much ,but still they are the first to hit the food bowls & last to leave, second to them are my Delaware's those 2 breeds seem to have food as their first priority no matter what , RIW are very people friendly by far above all my other breeds . I got them in a mixed breed order of the best egg layers from cackle hatchery. I am happy with them ..? VERY nice sweet birds .

How did you buy them? I cannot find them anywhere unless they are straight run and I'm only interested in hens. I've tried to get Cackle Hatchery to save this rose comb breed but don't seem too interested. I think if they were to do this because it would be APA recognized the sale of this bird would skyrocket!

I love my RIW they are wonderful, i have several heritage breeds, but the RIW are right up there with the best of the breeds:clap very friendly happy little birds that lay large eggs, you cant go wrong with RIW..!!! :thumbsup :woot :jumpy

CACKLE has them but only in the straight comb type, I would like to get a few RIW with the rose comb and a roo to go with them . they are great birds..!!! I cant pick a favorite between my RIW & my Australorps both breeds are fantastic..!!! then my next pick would be the new Hampshire red they lay jumbo eggs . and are wonderful birds as well.
