Serama

The Serama breed originated in Malaysia, apparently through the crossing of Japanese and Malaysian bantams.
Pros: calm, friendly, small
Cons: none!
I had a serama hen that I showed for 3 years (8 shows), and they are perfect for showing because they are small and very lightweight. Mine was very calm and docile also.

Pros: Sweet, talkative, small, colorful, broody
Cons: Not at all cold hardy,a pain to hatch,
Wonderful little birds, beautiful and sweet. They were a pain to hatch, but worth it. The babies didnt live past 7 weeks, though. All died. It was weird.
Great Broodie's, and very personable little birds! However, they CANNOT STAND the cold. I was lucky I didn't lose any - had a friend lose her best rooster.

Also, make sure you post pics of the birds you're interested in and ask other breeders. I kind of feel like I got screwed over, because a breeder claimed her hen & rooster pair was really good, but other breeders would have no part in using my birds in their breeder program. So def get a few opinions of birds you want. (And this was a well respected breeder, too)

Pros: So pretty, proud, great mothers and fathers, great layers
Cons: if you dont hand raise they can be very unfriendly
Our rooster Cogburn is BEAUTIFUL he will do anything for his hens. An adorable little crow, and he is a great father. The hens are great layers and get broody constantly. They are great mothers and will even share theyre babies and set together! Don't think twice about getting one of these chickens!

Pros: easy to care for, friendly, do good in heat, fun to watch, very nice
Cons: good flyers, dont do well in cold, not good layers
I love my Serama! i had a rooster, but he was actually very loud and was "mean" he would come at us all the time, luckily it didnt hurt though because he was so small. We now have a hen and she is wonderful! for her whole first year she lived in a cage and was never handled, then we got her and he could just hold her, pick her up, ect. She was not flighty at all! she lays the tinyiest eggs ever, there so cute!

Pros: Intelligent, precocious, tiny!
Cons: May need extra care as babies, good flyers
I got my chicks as 2-day-olds from a breeder. Beyond being sure the crumbles were ground a little finer for a week, they didn't need any special care. Right now they're almost a month old. They've been flying out of their tote for a good 10 days now. The tote is in my garden tub so they fly BACK into it to eat & sleep. They seem much smarter than the other Bantams/Silkies I have. They like to roost on the edge of the tote. They 'talk' to me every time I'm in the bathroom and don't seem to be fazed at all by my Toy Poodle, who is *fascinated* with them!!

Pros: Tiny, Sweet, Low Maintenance, easy, Begginer, etc.
Cons: Flighty
I love seramas! I think it's a great beginner bird! They are Sweet, Pocket sized, Easy to house, and Easy to train! The Serama was one of my first chickens.... I fell in love with them! I had to get more! My first one was a pullet and at the moment is now a hen. So I set off to find a rooster! I luckily found a rooster and housed him with my hen, But we have close neighbors. Luckily a very great thing about the serama is that the roo's crow is not loud at all! I am now a lovely Serama breeder!

Pros: Sweet sweet birds and very tolerant! Perfect pet and perfect to show. Good for hotter weather.
Cons: SIZE!!! Anything can get them, other birds pick on them and little ones can fit through big chicken wire. Also, not cold hardy.
I have had seramas for about 4 months and they are my favorite breed!!! Recently I had a 2 year old boy at my house with about 6 serama chicks (about a month old) running around and he was rotating handing them to me. He would give me one and it would jump down so he would get me another. They absolutely love people (especially when handled a lot as a chick). I've never had a chicken that age be so friendly. I can't even walk around with them without one jumping on my shoulder! They are pretty decent layers and perfect for places with hot weather! I would recommend seramas to anyone wanting chickens--unless your going to eat the eggs because they are so tiny ;)

Pros: Smart, Patient, Brave, Funny
Cons: Loves to copy bad habits from others, Ear-Piercing, Fragile
I would say that it is very patient, letting my sister do almost anything to it. It was ok no matter how much she touched it. It only squaks when she is doing something insensible to it. It basically just goes with the flow. The serama is very nice, brave, and likes to fight a lot. It never gives up in a fight too.

Pros: Easy, cheap to feed. Easy/ normally tame. Beautiful, many colors. Good around other pets. Dominant, not usually bullied. Great house pet.
Cons: Too fearless. Cannot free- range alone, if attacked easily killed. Hard to hatch, chicks are fragile. Not cold hardy.
My first Serama, May, just turned two, and is an absolute sweetie with humans. She is smart, fearless, and a joy to be around. However, she is also stubborn, constantly broody, manipulative, ornery, and just downright nasty. She's a bully, and can't be trusted to care for any chicks she hatches. She frequently chases down the dogs and flogs them. She also has this recurring delusion she is secretly Darth Vader. But for all her nastiness, she is awesome. She is tolerant to a fault with all humans, she's calm and knows how to prevent the dogs from wanting to chase her, she has house trained herself, and loves to go to school, the grocery store, Home Depot, and on road trips. She doesn't eat much, nor is she messy. Plus May is rather striking in appearance, with silvery-white feathers, a sleek, elegant body, and a long, fanned tail.

Pros: Smallest chicken in the world. Very pretty, variety of colors.
Cons: Too loud for tiny suburban backyard, tiny but adorable eggs.
Very cute little birds. They are friendly to other chickens but skittish toward me. They were way too loud for our little backyard. Lay very small adorable off white eggs.

Pros: Friendly, cute, full of personality, lots of color variety, make good pets, can be kept in smaller areas, good for showing
Cons: Eggs are tiny, can't handle cold weather, more susceptible to predators due to small size, very typey birds can be $$$$, can be messy eaters
I got my first serama pair in February, and have since added a few pullets. Mine range in weight from 10 oz. up to 14.5 oz., although I think my cockerel will probably eventually reach a pound. I love them! My husband loves them! Ours had not been handled much when we got them, but they tamed down really quickly with treats (mine LOVE raisins) and gentle handling. Of course now they're all terrible moochers...lol. Two of mine (Lucy and Lacy) are especially loving and will go to sleep in my hands when I'm petting/grooming them. One (Lucy) will run up to me and fly up onto my shoulder. They're just so danged CUTE!! Although the roosters aren't as loud as LF roos, some of them can still be pretty loud, so don't count on a tiny crow from a tiny rooster...lol.
Pet quality seramas can be had for around $25 - $35. Better quality $50 - $100. I've seen really nice birds sell for several hundred dollars each.

Pros: Friendly, beautiful array of colors, tiny, frizzles & silkied
Cons: not really cold tolerant... but that gives you an excuse to bring them in the house!
I just got a silkied pair and the hen especially is so tiny I can hardly believe she's real! They are also the friendliest, sweetest chickens I have ever owned. They actually seek out attention and if I give one too much attention the other gets upset! I was cuddling my rooster and the cage door was open, and the hen jumped out and made herself at home on my lap. The number of beautiful colors out there is astounding, and there are frizzles and booted as well as silkied and smooths! I my next will be a frizzle, I think. They are too cute!

Pros: very sweet, small and good for smaller spaces
Cons: little cold tolerance, a little flighty
I love my two seramas! They are super sweet, and the 3 month old pullet is kinda needy and chirpy but its really cute since she likes to follow me around everywhere! My hen is very sweet and is happy to just perch on my arm! They are pretty small, and my hen is less than 5 inches at the shoulder. Although be careful, as they are pretty flighty and since they have tiny bodies and large wings they can get far! My pullet is about 3 inches at the shoulder but can fly about 10 feet!! The silver laced hen in the picture gallery above is mine!

Pros: sweet and very tame. The rooster's are like a cartoon version of a standard size.
Cons: They do not tolerate cold well so they need some extra care.
I received two rooster's and a beautiful hen off of freecycle. The woman was going out of the country and needed them to go to a new home "like yesterday". I was instantly in love! I really don't think I could have to many. I now have 3 rooster's and two hens. Unfortunatly I didn't have the $ to get more because they are so expensive. I recently purchased an incubatore and I am currently doing a test run. If everything goes well I will get eggs to hatch. I don't think anything in the world (besides my kids) could be cuter than a serama chick. Oh also my little man Harold goes to the coffee shop with me and sits in their nice sunny garden and crows for everyone. They love it and the little kids love that they are able to pet him.
