Silkie

The silkie chicken was developed in the southeast asian countries or china. It was valued as a medicinal food item because of its black skin and bones
Pros: Decent layers, lovely to look at, wonderful selection of colors, great moms
Cons: Do not tolerate heat or cold extremes well. Cannot fly
Everyone needs ,a silkie or twenty... Great for kids, ladies love them. I sell lots of these, both eggs and chicks from the farm (local only, no shipping chicks).I have a pen of whites, one of blue, black and splash, and one with buff and red silkies. Hatching lots of splash lately, way cute!
Have one Silkie, she was supposed to be my incubator, ha, she is 2 years old and never gone broody. But, she is a VERY fierce protector of the yard, very sweet and loves lap time, is a good layer.

Pros: Friendly, cudly, personable
I have 3 blue pullets and 1 blue rooster. They peck at their window when they see me coming and run to the side of their run to greet me and beg me to let them out. My silkies love to follow me around, are easy to handle and care for and have quite the personalities. Little Man is a good boy who doesnt crow a lot and looks after his girls, always waiting till after they have eaten before he eats. I love my silkies!
Pros: Cute as could be
Cons: Not sure yet
I have one white bearded Silkie. Cute as a button but definitely stands out from the other chickens. I have more Silkie eggs on order so stay tuned!!!

Pros: Small, wonderful broody, great starter bird, friendly, easy to care for, kids love them
Cons: Their feathers when they get wet.
I can't think of a single negative thing to say about the silkie, except maybe their amount of eggs laid.. They are not a breed you get for eating eggs. I have three hens and a rooster. My rooster is very human friendly, takes wonderful care of his girls and usually only crows in the morning.

Pros: Sweet, adorable, great with kids, and very nice.
Cons: Can be expensive if its a very good quality and lay small eggs.
Silkies are very cuddly and soft. They're great with kids and will let me pick them up very easily with out having to chase them everywhere. They have a good personality and anyone that comes to visit, the silkies are there favorites! They lay small eggs so there not for someone that wants big eggs, if you want to show them than they can get expensive for good birds. If you don't plan on showing them, you can get them for cheap. The price above is how much I spent on ALL of my silkies, not just one.

Pros: so cute, friendly, docile, good layers when not broody
Cons: the go broody more often
I LOVE my silkies. They are gorgeous, sweet, everyone loves them! They let my 2 & 4 year old pick them up. They are nice to all the other breeds.

They go broody often which can be a good thing or bad thing. For me it is not so great as I do not plan on hatching any eggs soon but when they are not broddy they are great layers. I got almost an egg a day from each girl.

They also lay some pretty eggs.

I got mine from Cackle Hatchery

Pros: Sweet, adorable, soft, beautiful, friendly, good moms
Cons: Small eggs if you're eating them
I've had all kinds of laying hens for about 40 yrs. but I discovered silkies about a year ago and they totally captured my heart. They are so peaceful to watch with their adorable antics and so friendly and soft. They don't really seem like a chicken. More like an "Asian Ground Parrot" as someone on here called them!

Pros: Calm, friendly
Cons: Dirty feet, feathers. Long maturation period.
Love these little fur balls. Easy to handle and raise. Just a wonderful bird for kids and adults who enjoy the birds but don't need the eggs for food.

4 out of 5 stars only because they take so long to mature and start reproducing.

Pros: Mine are calm, docile, and like to be pet and held
Cons: Wouldn't be too useful for a layer since their eggs are small
I have black, splash and white silkies. They all have similar temperaments, in that they are calm and docile. Very sweet birds, and they are easy to get attached to them as pets. So far, mine are doing well in our temperatures of very hot summers to cold winters with snow. However, in the summer, I did set up a water mister system in their pen and made sure they had plenty of shade.

They did learn to use the ramp up to the coop, and can flap their wings enough to get themselves up to the bottom rung on my ladder style roost. The lowest rung, by the way is only about 4 inches off the floor. I've never seen them go higher than that on the roost, even though the ladder is very easy to navigate for the other birds. They also tend to sleep in a pile on the floor at night if they decide against the roost. I don't know if this is a Silkie thing, but I have two white silkies that are the "peace keepers" of the flock. If another bird (like a barred rock) is picking on another bird-- the Silkies go flying into action with feet out and chase down the birds that are not being nice. I've noticed they keep everyone in line and continue to stay on top of their job every day. Perhaps I'm lucky, or maybe this is a trait?

Below is a picture of my 9 month old Splash cockerel. One more thing to mention-- they LOVE to crow! All the time. They are not quiet about it. :)

Pros: Friendly, good mothers, pretty!
Cons: Not the best layers
When anyone thinks of a broody, they think of a Silkie. 5 stars for mothering ability. 2 stars for laying ability since they all seem to want to mother something, at least the ones I have had. The roosters are sweet and calm, cute as can be.

They are predator bait, being small and usually having obstructed vision from the hairstyle. They cannot fly either, with the consistency of their feathers.

To the untrained eye, it can take awhile to tell gender on babies with their unique look, and with their size it can be dangerous to vent sex them. If you can't have a rooster, it's best to buy these when gender is for sure known, from someone you trust.

Great pets and even better mothers.
wonderful, loving chickens that bring unlimited joy to your life!
