Silkie

The silkie chicken was developed in the southeast asian countries or china. It was valued as a medicinal food item because of its black skin and bones
Pros: sweet, well laying, good showing, great for kids
Cons: more work, need more cleaning
I love silkies! Some of the best birds out there! They are so sweet! Once you have one you are hooked you have to have more! I recommend silkies for anyone starting with bantams and showing. They are great with kids! They sometimes need more work because of there fluff but otherwise they are great!
Pros: Cute, funny, have a lot of personality, smart as well
Cons: Have to always keep an eye on them when roaming free so they won’t get attack
Very dirty
I have 1 silkie hen & so far she’s the best, she’s super funny & follows me where ever I go, though I have other chickens who try to attack, I’m always with her when I let her out to free roam, they are very sweet as well planning on getting her a new friend, I raised her when she was 3 days old & I enjoyed it, my dogs also love her

Pros: Sweet temperament, wonderful with kids, excellent mothers, good layers
Cons: Defenseless, small eggs
It was a while before we tried this breed. However, after we did we ended up giving away all of our other chickens and going with only silkies. We love them that much! We couldn’t keep them with other chickens because they are completely defenseless and don’t seem to understand the pecking order. I have met one or two mean silkies. However all of the others that I have ever known and all of the ones we have ever had have been total sweethearts. Including the roosters. We completely love them. Also, they’re pretty good little egg layers.

This bantam is a 5 star bantam chicken.

They are cute, fluffy, affectionate, and goes broody quite a bit!!
The only cons are that they only lay small eggs every other day!!
Pros: Calm, affectionate, docile, easily handled, beautiful, make terrific pets and Great mothers
Cons: None!
Silkie chickens are one of the most sweetest chickens you"ll ever interact with. They are not "flighty" or "skittish", instead they will give no hesitation whenever being handled by anyone! I have received so many positive comments from many of my friends and family about my silkie chickens. They are MUST HAVE in any chicken flock; I highly recommend you get some especially if your looking for a hen to raise some chicks or as just pets!
Pros: Cute, Tame, Fluffy, Good egg layer,
Cons: The white silkies get their feathers dirty looking.
I love my 2 silkies! We used to have 5 but now we have 2. 3 of them died. They are sweet and have alot of personality. Especially when you look into their eyes! I'd definetly recommend silkies. They r awesome!

Pros: Friendly, cute, big personalities, smart (too smart sometimes), lots of entertainment
Cons: Bossy, slow to mature, difficult to gender
I love these little guys even if they can be a tad bit bossy which I am not sure if it is common or just my little group but when it comes to food and treats they get bossy and pushy with each other, other animals, and even people. Not aggressive, just go after all the food. I have had pizza snatched from my hands twice now by one of my puffballs.Their cuteness and sweetness and social dispositions far outweigh that however. They are sweet and curious making them fantastic pets but hard to gender and slow to mature. I'm alright with that since they were bought for pets and as the safe chickens for my little niece who loves them and honestly I love them too. They are so smart and all know their names and for whatever reason have gotten into the habit of picking shavings out of their own water which is pretty interesting. They are little comedians too who enjoy spending their time with their humans.
Pros: Very gentle to each other, almost harmless, very kind, calm, quiet, beautiful, adorable, fluffy, funny, very good mothers.
Cons: Can be easily bullied by other birds so it's best to raise them alone, not very good for free ranging because they are unaware of predators.
I had 4 silkie chicks at the age of 4 months, i added to their group 2 silkie at the age of 1 month and they were very kind to them and cuddled with them during the night, they are very loving and peaceful, calm and quiet birds, with a very unique look.

Pros: Funny, Adorable, Friendly
We have 2 silkies, a blue silkie hen named Caroline and a black silkie rooster named Dot. They are so cute. They always stay together when their outside and they are fun to hold because they are so fuzzy! My rooster is so friendly towards other roosters, even if they aren't friendly towards him. They are 1 of my favorite breeds.

Pros: Broody, friendly, and very cute birds
Cons: Stray from flock, odd at times(which isn't neccessarily a con), and sometimes too broody.
I have 4 Silkies, 2 roos and 2 hens. Our 2 hens are the consistent, "backyard chickens" who come running to the gate behind me bocking all the way after letting them out. Our little black silkie is a bit spoiled as in she'll stand at the glass doors staring at us begging while we eat our meal next to her. Her favorite treat is bananas. The other white silkie hen is not afraid of much at all and will get out practically almost under the shovel if working on the garden, so they have a brave streak in them. She knows the easy way to the bugs and worms.
They are very independent in the fact they don't mind being away from the rest of the flock which consists of 20 chickens. The roosters do fine looking after the ladies but our smallest silkie which happens to be a rooster also has Napoleon Syndrome. Sometimes you'll feel a little bump and wonder if it was the wind or his amassed 2lbs of almost all feather attacking your leg. He happens to be at the very bottom of the pecking order and is just trying to impress the other chickens I've come to the conclusion.
If you're looking to bring something different to your flock this breed is great as they are unique like I said and can be very friendly. They do tend to get pushed to the bottom of the pecking order due to their size and friendliness. The broodiness does happen much more frequently then the other 8 breeds I have so if you're looking for a broody bird this ones great.
Pros: Sweet, docile, gentle, good with kids, just gorgeous
Cons: Not particularly weather hardy, very vulnerable
I have 2 silkies and I absolutely ADORE them. When properly raised, silkies are some of the most sweet, gentle, kid friendly birds. Think small fluffy bunny when picturing a silkie. They're more like fluffy mammals than chickens. Surely this is what Marco Polo was writing of when he wrote of "chickens with wool."
Pros: Interesting, cute, small, wonderful disposition, and great broody mothers!
Cons: Egg laying can be a con since they are often broody. They also require a little more TLC than other breeds.
Silkies are a wonderful bantam pet breed in my experience. They have funny personalities and are friendly, even with children. They make great, nurturing mothers and even the roosters are often good with chicks. This is why some use silkies to hatch eggs from other types of poultry. The silkie girls were born to be mothers and often go broody. They are dedicated and determined to hatch!
I say they require more TLC than other breeds, because they cannot see well with their large puffy crests. They are a very easy target for predators and should be free ranged only under close supervision. This also makes them fall easy from attacks of other chickens, and they can easily get brain injuries from head pecks. Silkies aren't the best about putting themselves away in a coop either when they have an attached run, so it may be necessary to pick them up and put them to bed. This is especially true when it's cold and wet.
I think their fluffy look is absolutely adorable! Silkies are the chicken for me.

Pros: Quiet, easy keepers, friendly, low maintenance
Cons: Don’t handle extreme temps well, prone to mites
I breed silkies and have found that better quality birds have that sweet loving personality. Poorly bred birds tend to be flighty and aggressive. My 6 year old niece can handle all my roosters and they make great fathers even to chicks that aren’t theirs. They aren’t a heavy egg layer tho so definately more of a pet and lawn ornament.

Pros: Heat tolerant
Cons: Not very cold hardy
Cute, fluffy and I have a very docile strain, so far, just babies...but they act very brave and bold and often try to boldly walk out of their cage. They are easy to approach and calm down quickly when you handle them.I can see why some people a long time go used to believe they were rabbit and chicken crosses!
Pros: Sweet, good mothers, and funny
Cons: Not smart and get dirty
These birds are the best breed i've had so far. I highly recommend them. Once I got my first batch I was hooked and made a business in breeding them. Great moms and very sweet. The only thing I have to say is that the buff silkies are a little crazy.

I bought my son one of these because he loved the way the feathers look like hair. It is so docile and quiet. Within a week, I had bought a few more. I would highly recommend this breed !

Pros: Docile, loving, will raise your chicks, very good with children.
Cons: Can't think of any, excpet that their crests and small size makes them have a greater risk with predators.
I love silkies, they are my favorite breed! They go broody constantly. Very tame, they are also very good with children. Not aggressive. The best chicken breed!
