Marans and Back-crossed OE Breeding Project.

That thing looks gnarly! Good advice, I’ll retie it and keep it open for a few days. I’ve stopped keeping the chicken feed out all day and switched to 2x a day feedings. Hopefully that makes a dent too.

After setting the trap last night, we caught a dozen this morning. It works great! Makes me worry about how many rats I may have though.

Just got a chicken related purchase in the mail….we have a terrible rat problem that just popped up.

Thanks! Eventually the goal will be to sell some of the BC olive chicks and hatching eggs to offset feed costs, and scratch the itch of hatching and whatnot.

Yes definitely! I plan on maybe November/December. That should put them at the 8 month mark and hopefully laying healthy full size eggs at that point. Everything I’ve seen said not to hatch pullet eggs but I think 8 months is close enough?

    Wrath's Marans

I gotcha. That seems way easier than having 3 separate pens for the different clans.

I may have missed it from earlier, are you doing a clan mating strategy or anything like that?

Overall plan this fall will be to cross Ferdinand with my dark layer to get more dark laying birds, and mix him with the two Craigslist pullets. From there I’ll dabble with a cross of my dark layer and the big yellow legged roo to make them a little larger. If you all have any thoughts or...

Lastly, a group photo and my other BC1 olive and hybrid marans that hatched from the broody hen.

Here’s my single prized pullet that hatched earlier this spring from the dark egg. Hopefully can get a few daughters from her some day.

Here’s the big guy from the Craigslist group. I’d be very excited about him if he didn’t have the dang yellow legs. The pullet next to him is one of the BC1 olives. She has some nice fluffy legs. I’ll probably try a few crosses from him to see if the yellow can be bred out.

Here’s a few shots of my two keeper pullets from the Craigslist group. Getting decent photos is tough!

I’m a big fan of your blue guy above. Hope he works out for you.

Thanks! It’s a start. Hopefully I can start hatching from these in December or January.

These are my two favorite girls from the Craigslist birds. I’m hoping to atleast get eggs in the 4 range from them. I’ll post some better photos next week of the whole group.

Thanks for asking! I’ve been terrible at updating it. There’s actually been a decent amount going on with it. - The two that I hatched from the incubator both turned out to be pullets! So from that, I have one dark egg pullet and one BCOE from my over melanised rooster Ferdinand. - I had a...

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Sounds good. I’ll plan on crossing the yellow shanks with my darker egg group and see what happens. Hopefully it makes them a bit larger.
