nestboxes + holidays + pet sitters

I use Elector PSP which is an effective, infrequent treatment, so I don't really know about products you have to reapply often.

nestboxes + holidays + pet sitters

Umm, I think it's reasonable if the nests get dirty or if there's still a mite problem. Personally I wouldn't throw those next pads away so quickly due to the expense, but if it's fine by you that's what matters! If you wanted the changes to be on a schedule just so the sitter isn't trying to...

Tractor Supply 18 chicken coop - how to seal the bare wood? Plus a few other ???

See my rough drawing on your picture in my post before last. It's not exact, as you can leave some at the sides for structural support and make decisions looking at the actual surface in real life. I'll repost it... I noticed in your most recent post with pictures that the one showing that...

nestboxes + holidays + pet sitters

The nesting pads are easiest to use, so a good option for a pet sitter. Being quick to change raises the chance they will actually get changed. Lol If I were going away my chief obsession would be making sure they have redundant water sources. Maybe backups for the backups.

Tractor Supply 18 chicken coop - how to seal the bare wood? Plus a few other ???

Can you return it? It's too small. Just some HW cloth over a sizeable ventilation cutout does just fine. The goal is to have enough ventilation up high that ammonia never builds up to a level that would harm materials, OR bird lungs. The airways of chickens are very delicate. If we can smell...

Inquiring minds want to know... Do guy chicken keepers also wear pajamas out there?

Tractor Supply 18 chicken coop - how to seal the bare wood? Plus a few other ???

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. Here's a great article... Repecka Illustrates Coop Ventilation You did a nice job with the roof on the run! Here's where I see a good spot for ventilation... Being familiar with the way those board sections slide into the metal frame, you may have to go down...

Apparently you can’t die of embarrassment..

A few weeks ago we received an urgent text from neighbors that a coyote was right outside our yard. We didn't see the msg until later because we were outside working. Which left me wondering just how sneaky these things are that I could be working in the area and not see it. A huge pack of them...

    FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

White Faced Black Spanish cockerel. $50 From 100% imported Spanish lines. In Ocala. Sorry it's kind of a bad picture, I'll try to update with a better one. I was using him for a project, now I have a good number of chicks, so he can find a nice new home. Figured I'd offer him here first...

    Mcmurray Hatchery Red Leghorns

That color actually looks really good on them. Surprising because I don't usually like red birds.

Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV) clean Legbar source

I hadn't heard much about this virus before so I looked up the details in the Merck Veterinary manual. It was confusing to see they said (on different areas) both that it's present in most commercial flocks, and that it's been removed from most commercial flocks. How prevalent is it actually?

    I’m so upset…

Good suggestions here. I'll just add, my method to get a chicken down from a high place or out of an awkward place is to get a really long pole. Hopefully not too heavy, and wood is better than smooth plastic/metal although it might do in a pinch. Then extend your pole out to the chicken...

Purina Flock to Farm 18% Scratch

We have a lot of sand in FL, I used to think it counted as grit but it really doesn't. Learned the hard way with repetitive crop issues. Putting out insoluble granite has proven a good preventative for mine, and they actually consume a lot of it compared to what others report. 2-3 bags / year...

    Unusual flock behavior

There probably is. Alligators are jerks. Living in FL I've learned to expect them in all sorts of places, pools, drainage ditches, even climbing chain link fences. OP, I'm voting predators too. Hiding out in the woods is another "safe place". Especially when temps are not hot and bugs are not...

Eggs what do you do if they are dirty and how dirty is acceptable? Maybe you could show me your eggs you collect?

We don't even wash occasional dirty eggs. They go to the crows or back to the chickens. I'd consider an egg "dirty" if it has any mark on it that can't be simply wiped off (like an egg laid in sand). Personally, if I get a couple dirty eggs in a row, I go to the coop to check / clean the...

“What the eff is this white stuff on the ground and what are you going to do about it?” Said my hens

Commiseration ! It's been horrible lately. And a lot of bait & switch with the shipping speed, as soon as we click buy it goes from 2 days to 5-7 days. Our cats did not appreciate the delay on their kitty litter, which is still cheapest from there. I think it would take me a lot of years to...

Tractor Supply 18 chicken coop - how to seal the bare wood? Plus a few other ???

We used automotive stick-on seal as weather stripping. (Found next to the door seals). It seems to work better. I do like the idea of making it out of wood for sturdiness, but our application under a hinged roof wouldn't have worked. We got the dog house made by the same brand and modded it...

“What the eff is this white stuff on the ground and what are you going to do about it?” Said my hens

The only thing I know about snow is a survival tip for humans... It has to be melted before consuming. It takes a lot of energy from the body to turn frozen water into usable water, because cold is actually an absence of energy. So it sucks heat energy away. Also there is a lot of air in snow...

Lavender and chocolate splits genetics question

I'm not a genetics expert, but I believe that Isabel is made on different bases in different breeds. In some it's Wheaten, but in others it's Buff (if memory serves). So I think the end result of adding Lavender is similar. I've read also that Buff is variable and can be hard to stabilize...

    Outdoor brooder; opinions needed

It's not a bad idea, but the main limitation I see is that it's only 17" deep. That's a foot and a half, roughly. Not a concern for small chicks, but they will outgrow that width more quickly and the first indication will be arguments as they have less space to get around each other. We did...
