Hi Nify,
Thanks for checking on me. I haven't been on here because my wild ducks have grown and have moved on out of their mom's apartment. LOL!
Just a few weeks ago, a dog killed a mamma duck that left 5 of her eggs on a nest that we've been watching. I brought them in and put them in my...
LOL! Sorry! They have a yearly "round-up" for all the Pythons in the Everglades. They get huge! I've been here since 1987 and have yet to see one.
Now water & other snakes...that's a different story.
L-Karma, did you raise your ducks from eggs? They should know your voice at 5 weeks old. I would "quack" at mine all the time so they would know my voice and once they decided to check things out on their own, I was always able to go down the yard and start
"quacking" and they would come...
I did that too for the ones I raised. Now they're out on their own but like to take advantage of my fountain. I've had to clean it 3 days in a row now.
Since I raised 3 Muscovy's from eggs I had them in the kennel/coop after they were about 3 weeks old. It only took one time of putting them in the coop with some food and after that they had no problem going in. I kept the door shut until bedtime so they couldn't go in and hang out inside all...
That's so sad. I'm sorry this happened to you and the mamma duck!
I have a momma on a nest now with 16 eggs behind my fountain in the front yard. This is the 3rd time a female has used this site. Must be a good one because nothing has ever happened....yet.
My 6 week old Muscovies did the same thing. I showed them how to get up the ramp into the coop and after that they went on their own. Sometimes they just hang out in there. Maybe they are trying to catch the flys. :p
Thank you, Miss Lydia.
If they don't want to leave that's totally up to them. They have a home here if they wish.
I just figured they would want to leave like all the baby ducks do.
FL Zoo Mom,
I've wondered the same thing. I have 3 Muscovies that are six weeks old today. They come out of their pen and follow me around but still find comfort in the pen. These are the 3 I raised from eggs that the momma abandoned.
If I see some adults in my front yard (waiting for...
The law is weird here. Makes no sense. They are protected somewhat because they are considered migratory but then a homeowner can kill them humanely if they are on their property. They are considered an invasive species, except in some places near the border in Texas.
A lot of my neighbors...
You are a wonderful duck keeper! I bet it's so much fun watching them.
I live in S. Florida so the weather is good. The wildlife predators in my area include hawks, raccoons, opossums, once in a while a fox and recently the coyotes are hanging around.
I ended up with 3 eggs because for the...
