Thank you SO much for replying. They all hatched within the same week, so they're all the same age, all started laying within a short time frame last Aug (2024)....
This site is wonderful! so many great people to help us relative "newbies". I have noticed several other things happening recently, any recommendations would be appreciated. I had one hen die (I think it was Aug 31)...I did post about it under
Sick hen- lethargic
you can read the thread...
I have a broody hen with NO roosters....nothing will ever hatch, but she is relentless. It's the second time this summer that she's gone broody. Should I break her....close her in "chicken jail" (an additional section of the run that I can close off and they can't go back and forth, although...
Well....too late now. Just went out to check on her and she was gone. But, for future information, if this should occur with another of my "chicas"....is there anything different I should do? Thank you
I have a very similar situation. I have an extremely lethargic hen. She was "iffy" last night, lethargic, didn't go running for treats, etc. She (well, all of the flock have no feathers on their butts, some are missing more, except for one...so I know who the culprit is and will put her in...
Thank you both SO much for your info. They all seem to be behaving normally, eating, pooping, dust bathing, etc. Here's a pic of today's egg. I'll check them out tonight!
Went to collect eggs this afternoon and found this....as titled, I'm guessing this is a matter for concern. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you!
I just noticed today that a couple of my "chicas" appear to have "freezer burn" on the some of the tips of their combs. We are in Minnesota and a week ago our temps went down to -26f....now I see this. Would putting vaseline on the tips help with the healing? I've never had this happen before...
They are the same chicks. They started laying towards the end of August and have been laying regularly since. I have a try of oyster shell for them...I'll add more to make sure there is enough. Thank you for the reply!
One more time with the poo! Yesterday I found this (pic #1) on the poop shelf. Today I found (pic #2). That whole corner of the poop shelf was soaking wet....don't know who. Looks concerning to me, but what do I know?
Any feedback would be very much appreciated! Thanks

This is a continuation of the above...this pic shows today's eggs...clearly one of the EE, which have been laying since Aug 20, daily, beautiful little pullet eggs at first, growing steadily and now this, which is also very thin shelled....should I be concerned?
I've just experienced the same thing....I have 7 pullets, 2 EE among other breeds. Most started laying about a month ago. One, my sapphire gem, just started this week. This morning I went out and collected 6 eggs, only 1 blue/green....figured the other EE took the day off. After a couple of...
After reading your article I took my new "chicas" outside (at about 2 weeks)...best thing ever. I live in Minnesota. They were(are) protected with plastic all around & heater in there. I was very concerned the first night as the temp went down to 30. They did great! In the future all my new...
