Thanks for reminding me I need to put some blocks on one side of mine so the littles can reach the nipples too. They just got released from the brooder today, and still have their waterer in their brooder they can access but I should make sure they can get to the adult waterer in the run too!
Seconding the Premier1 heated waterer. I have one and its going into its third winter now. We use it year round, I just remove the power cord in the summer.
Usually once one chicken figures out the nipples, the rest catch on pretty quickly.
I usually start out with an open waterer for the...
I have a dog, my neighbor on one side has 5 dogs. My other neighbor directly behind me has two BIG dogs (Cane Corso's). Raccoons dont care about house dogs.
If you build it and stuff it with yummy yummy chicken, they will come.
The escape hatch has been opened. They very quickly learned that the world outside the brooder walls has three very scary giants inhabiting it. Exploring is going....cautiously.
The wood pellets are back leveled out. Caught the ones who still had leg bands on and removed them because once they're not confined to the brooder I dont want to take the chance I wont be able to easily catch them again.
So now I'll have difficulty telling the difference between Laverne and...
Yep, the wood pellets mostly stay put. Except now with some determined excavators….. The baking tray I keep the food and water in helps too.
They still manage to kick food into the water tho. I hung a small nipple waterer a few days ago. Most of them are reliably drinking from that so when I...
Naw, they figured that out right quick when I first started using pellet bedding.
But they do like going after the chick crumbles any time they get a chance. I think they are digging thru the bedding hoping to find the chick crumbles.
I thought about opening up small door in the brooder cage this weekend to let the littles start exploring.
I just worry about Gimpy if she should decide to go out to the run. I don’t have a ramp to the pop door, just a stump of wood to let them hop in and out easier.
Not sure if Gimpy would be...
I love that chick stage of feathering in where they start getting feathers just above their wings. They look like little linebackers with massive shoulder pads on.
These two finally got names. Laverne and Shirley.
It got down to 30° last night in the run. The coop near the floor stayed about 40°.
All the chicks were active and spunky this morning. Even Gimpy was out bopping around. She’s able to put enough weight on her bad leg that she can now...
Here’s an in progress shot. Usually once they get to the insides mine focus on the good stuff. Aka pumpkin guts. They usually leave the skin alone until they have it mostly hollowed out.
I also only have three adults currently (well, if you go by brain power 2.5…the Polish is not the brightest...
