"The story of building a coop and keeping illegal chickens"
2010-03-20
How it started
It all started in March 2010 with the passing of our most loved pet...
Mac Daddy!
He was a beautiful fawn colored, 205 lb., well behaved great dane that we raised from a 12 week old...
Milwaukee passed the ordinance!! I had a run in with that grumpy old alderman...I know who you mean!! But who cares now...I wish I lived next door to him so I could have hens to educated that grump!
As of Tuesday the 24th of May 2011 Milwaukee's common council voted to allow up to 4 hens per yard....Of course there are rules, but we can handle rules...
Don't most of you live out where you can grow some feed for your chickens??...I live in the city with a 20x20 yard and if I let them "free range" they hardly use any feed and they are only out eating grass for 4 hrs a day! I think it takes me 6 months to go thru 50lbs. of layer feed with 4...
Here are a few pics...still walks, eats, drinks and poops! I have felt it, stretched it, pulled it...does not seem to be in pain, no breaks...could it be a difficiency of some sort?? I see him every day and noticed it yesterday....he seems to step on his left foot with the right one cuz its...
Mites...it sounds like mites..they get into the ears and put the birds off balance...get it solved quickly with poultry dust...My hen started the same thing last week and I treated her and the others with dust...I wasn't quick enough...she died tonight! I reconized the foot thing...that seems...
My hen died tonight from the mites...I think she was so weak that she stopped eating and drinking....I dusted her and the others but I think I was to late....
Check her vent area really well too! do it at night with a flashlight to see if you see and creepy crawlies...you descibed perfectly what my hen was doing...I treated her yesterday and now she is doing much better! I will wash her today and see what happens...let me know what happens with...
Check for mites...It is mite season and mine had mites and enough of them on her face and in her ears to put her off balance!! Treat quickly with poultry dust if you see mites as the hens can down hill quickly.
This is what just has been happening with mine...I took a closer look and she had red mited crawling all over her...they apparently are in her ears and causing the limping/unsteadiness! She needs attention right away if it is mites...I only noticed the mites because i was looking at her face...
When is peak mite season?? As a horticulturalist it was always standard to treat mites with a mitecide as mites are hard to kill with many other insecticides?? I just bought poultry dust with an active ingredient of pyrethrin...hope it works!! The one bird is weak and off balance..one reply...
Great..thanks..I will get the sevin dust asap and get that applied and give vitamins in water then a bath tomorrow...what about the chicks that are kept seperate from them?? they are 5-6 wks old...dust them too??
thanks..do I need to do that with both birds as I have two...the other does not seem to have mites... I've never washed a chicken before?? we have 10 chicks as well that are kept seperate from the two that have mites...chicks are 5-6 weeks old, what about them??
HELP...I thoought my chicken had fallen and was limping on one of her legs...when i picked her up ths afternoon I noticed that she has all these crawling red mites around her eyes and her body...she seems to be off balance...how do I treat her and get the mites off her eyes??
I ran into the same problem with six chicks out growing the basement....I just moved them into the garage in a closed in coop box and a heat lamp....the garage stays warmer at night and now I don't have to smell those growing, messy, loud and energetic chicks in my laundry room anymore! They...
