    Duckling pipped last night..Now, nothing

they were upright with the small end down. since I didn't look too closely i think he must have been deformed, i can see no other way that he could have been in that position.

    Duckling pipped last night..Now, nothing

I just opened the egg. poor little fella didn't make it. It didn't seem like he was in the egg quite right though, one of his legs was sitting on top of his head. I didn't look too closely, he could have been deformed though. I just hope my other two eggs make it.

    Duckling pipped last night..Now, nothing

Thank you for replying. I found a lot of numbers at what to incubate them at, some said 50% and some said 80% so i just went with 60. This is my first hatch so i wasn't expecting too much.

    Duckling pipped last night..Now, nothing

Last night one of my ducklings pipped and was peeping away, this morning - nothing. no rocking, no peeping...nothing. Something felt off so I candled it (i know, bad) and I can see his beak in the air cell..but there's no movement, nothing when i tap the egg. I'm thinking it's dead, should I...

    Chick hatching today 5/26/12

Unfortunately the little guy didn't make it. He was alive this morning but the two hens swapped nests and in the process crushed the egg. Little guy was a pretty black color, too.

    Chick hatching today 5/26/12

Little guy still isn't out yet.. Made it through the membrane, but mom got up and accidentally went back to the wrong nest so now I'm a tad worried he may be shrink wrapped.

    Chick hatching today 5/26/12

I've had 2 broody hens sitting for awhile, and finally their work is paying off! Unfortunately they were only sitting on 2 eggs between them, and one died so there is only one :( I thought the egg was due to hatch yesterday, so today i went out to check on it and candle it if s/he had not...

Hen laying on side, very bright red comb..??*UPDATE* post 6

I don't believe she has had any trauma to the eye. However, I did hear a lot of squawking earlier in the day, something may have happened then that I didn't see. I'll check again in the morning, but i did not see anything very obvious when i first checked.

Hen laying on side, very bright red comb..??*UPDATE* post 6

Thanks for the replies... This is a pretty average temperature for this time of year. This morning, i went out expecting to find her dead. I'm happy to tell you i found just the opposite! She was actually up and even got out of the coop on her own. However, she appears to be not seeing well...

Hen laying on side, very bright red comb..??*UPDATE* post 6

Not hot at all, it's been in the 30s/40s lately. If i recall there was a bit of "wheezing" sounds.. it's dark now and I don't want to go bother her.. I thought it kind of looked like a seizure, or maybe shock?? quite odd, really.

Hen laying on side, very bright red comb..??*UPDATE* post 6

When I went out to check on the chickens this evening, honestly i thought she was dead. She was laying on her side, head tucked in.. i'm not quite sure whats going on here. Her mouth is also gaping open every once in awhile, as if gasping for breath?? Her comb is also a very unnormal BRIGHT red...

To move..Or not to move? that is the question. (Broody Hen)

I'm especially worried about them falling once hatched. It's an awfully long way to fall for a baby :(

To move..Or not to move? that is the question. (Broody Hen)

My 2ish year old hen has decided to sit again this year. However, she has chosen a nesting box that is 1-2ft off the ground, and that the other hens like to use as well. Since she's lower in rank, I'm wondering if I should move her into my large brooder that I built last year for my ducks...
