    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Speak of the devil! I just went out and found this: Based on the size and color, I'm pretty sure that's the first egg from the legbar! It's a pretty dark blue with a hint of green. My adult blue and green egg layers are all molting, and their eggs are bigger, so I don't think it's them--and...

Thanks, @dheltzel , that's what I'm afraid of. :) I wasn't planning to add light, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they decide to start very soon. They have all filled out nicely (even more than the pics show--some of those pics are several weeks old) and have red combs, but none...

Hey there, just dropping in to say hi and share some pics! It's been awhile, and the chicks I got from @dheltzel are 25 weeks old today. They have turned out to be really lovely. :) The Legbar, Poppy The Olive Egger (left), Goldilocks, and the Welbar (right), Ginger: The Blue Egg Black...

    The Olive-Egger thread!

Aww, they look much more grown up now, very pretty! It looks like they got some rich coloring, and I do like this wild type pattern. I like their names, too! :) I considered both of those--all my hens have botanical names, and those are some apt choices for an olive egger!

    The Olive-Egger thread!

Pretty!! I have gotten most of my chickens from Meyer, including an OE, but mine is the Welsummer cross. The Marans cross you got is really beautiful, and I'm glad she's started to lay pretty olive eggs for you! I had been hoping for the Marans cross, and was a bit disappointed at first when...

    fenbendazole dosage?

So, just planning to treat this one hen to start, then do the rest of the flock in the fall. I think ascarid is the most likely, and I have no reason to think that she does have capillary worms, but I guess without testing I can't be sure that she doesn't.... :/

    fenbendazole dosage?

Thanks, KikisGirls, yes, I was wanting to do just the pale combed EE for now. I was planning to do the whole flock later in the fall once more are molting and the egg production drops, so we won't have to discard so many eggs, but I didn't want to wait until then to treat this one girl.

    fenbendazole dosage?

I thought safeguard sounded easier than Wazine for one bird, but maybe I'm wrong. I have the liquid Wazine, and my understanding is that I'd have to mix 1oz/gal water, keep this hen in isolation for 24 hours to be sure she gets the water, not eat her eggs for 14 days (which effectively means...

    fenbendazole dosage?

Thanks for your reply! I definitely want to get roundworms, since I know they were in my flock, but I figure as long as I'm at it I'd use the stronger dosage and longer dosing time to try to fight as broad a spectrum as possible. I haven't seen any worms in their poop, but the necropsy did...

    fenbendazole dosage?

How is your hen doing now? And, not to hijack, but... @casportpony, I read all through this thread, and I want to be sure that I understand the dosing you are explaining. The Uganda study recommends 15-20mg/kg dosage of flubendazole for effectiveness, yes? And the vet you quoted below...

    the sultan thread

I had one sultan hen in with a mixed flock of 16 hens of various ages, including 1 polish, 1 legbar, 1 Wyandotte, marans, buff orp, EEs, etc. and everyone got along just fine. She was low in the pecking order, especially being smaller, but nobody caused any trouble. To follow up on posts from...

@Auroradream26, for the Penn State Animal Diagnostic Lab, they can call 814-863-0837, and their website at http://vbs.psu.edu/adl has a lot of good information as well. I had to call and leave a message there today, and got a call back in just a few hours from a very helpful member of the...

Sultan hen walking backwards, lethargic??? (Video included)

I would love if that were true! Her foot feathers do look pretty ragged. I assumed that happened with her sitting and shuffling around so much lately, but I'm not certain about that.

Sultan hen walking backwards, lethargic??? (Video included)

I got her as a day old chick last summer, and she has generally been allowed to free range in the yard during the day, and sleeps in the coop at night, except when the hawks were really bad this winter/early spring and they were in the coop and run most of the time. I do think she has some...

Sultan hen walking backwards, lethargic??? (Video included)

Thanks, Barbara! I'll have to ask the vet about the Marek's test after having the vaccine... :/ Hmm. I definitely hear your point about the combination of meds not necessarily doing the same job as one would do individually. I started it when I saw the bright green poop, because it seemed...

Sultan hen walking backwards, lethargic??? (Video included)

I hadn't heard of inner ear problems in chickens, but someone on Facebook mentioned that, too. I will have to read up more on this....

Sultan hen walking backwards, lethargic??? (Video included)

Thank you, Barbara! I am concerned about possible Marek's, too, per my comments in the post a moment ago. She is currently quarantined, but I know it's highly contagious, so if she has it I will have to assume the others were all exposed before I pulled her out of the flock. I am going to try...

Sultan hen walking backwards, lethargic??? (Video included)

She seems the same today--no better, no worse. I can try to grab some pics of her feet and legs. Her foot looks good to me, definitely on the mend, I think. Her leg scales still look wonky, but I expect those would take some time to improve. Not the last 30 days, but about 9 weeks ago I...

Pics--does she have bumblefoot AND scaly leg mites?

Thank you! I did end up treating her for both things. The bumble foot was almost completely healed by the time we found it, but we did the Epsom salt soak and then removed as much of the bumble as was left. The scaly leg mites don't seem bad, but we treated her with ivermectin and gave her and...

Sultan hen walking backwards, lethargic??? (Video included)

Thanks so much, @oldhenlikesdogs . Actually, her not being able to see well was my first thought, too, so the first thing I did about a week ago was to trim her crest so she could see better. Obviously from the video there's still plenty more I could cut back, and maybe I'll give that a try...
