Mixing hen groups in new cage

It´s gonna be a bit bigger than what they have right now, which is 6-7 sqm (so around 2sqft per bird), so by adding a couple more would definitely not go below 1, most likely will have a bit more than 1.5 sqft per bird.

Mixing hen groups in new cage

Must be about 40cm deep or so. Then again, I am in the top floor, so those garden areas have access to direct sunlight and no roof (it barely rains here in Lima). It was purposed for having grass, but I have reconverted some to have a small planting area. And quails now haha.

Mixing hen groups in new cage

Haha no prob, there it goes (its the top floor of the building). It was nicer when there was grass beneath the birds though.

Mixing hen groups in new cage

Let´s summarize it as garden is ruined, there is no grass, I have no space for further rotation - decision is taken to move birds from on-the-ground cage to a traditional above ground cage. The key question is if in this move, there is an opportunity to add birds (1-2 addtl) to the current...

Mixing hen groups in new cage

To put it simply, I have 3 of them in a 1 sq meter cage, and the garden is 2 sqm (this is a garden in an apartment we are talking, not a house with an aviary). So I have them a couple of weeks in one side, then move it to the other. At the beginning there was grass, but now there is grass in...

Mixing hen groups in new cage

Rat shouldnt be a problem. I live in the 5th floor of a new building, and this is in an inside garden. Haven´t seen a rat in my life close to where we live.

Mixing hen groups in new cage

So currently I have 3 hens in a cage directly on the ground, but as I see how the soil deteriorates, and given that I have only 2 positions for it to rotate, I am seriously thinking in getting them a more typical wired based cage (sad for them though). My question would be - if I were to do...

Rice with weevil bugs - Good protein source?

They are little beetle-like insects that feed on grains - so its a pest infecting rice and others (if you have a bag of rice and let it sit for months, it will probably grow some). Thing is, they attacked a complete bag of my paella rice, so I took like 30-40 of the little bastards, put them on...

Rice with weevil bugs - Good protein source?

so... no one? am I in unchartered territory here?

Rice with weevil bugs - Good protein source?

So I found a bag of rice completely infested with rice weevils. Stated picking up several of them, put them in a plate and served them to my quails. They absolutely went nuts and finished them in matter of minutes. Has anyone else done this? I now feel tempted to always keep an aitight...

What time of day do your quail lay eggs?

    I have 3 hens, 90% of eggs collected between 4.30pm and 7pm.

    Quails stopped laying

And they were! This would be the day by day egg production after their arrival at age 6w aprox: (for 3 hens) Day 0 (arrival): 2 eggs Day 1: 2 Day 2: 1 Day 3-7: 0 Day 8: 1 soft shell egg Day 9-12: 0 Day 13: 2 eggs! Day 14-22 (yesterday): 1.8 eggs in average (between 1 and 3 eggs per day, not...

    Quails stopped laying

So just to update, got 2 solid eggs today! It was day 11 since the last hard eggs (there was a single soft shell egg on day 6). Hopefully will start to see some continuation tomorrow, and that this means that my stream of eggs has started!

    Coop/Cage Pictures? - Deep Litter

Does that moving around affect their laying? I brought these girls home and they appear to be starting to lay again (I just found an egg this morning after 5 days in blank), but I´m afraid to sort of ruin their adaptation process. Also, dont care much about the grass. Mainly want to move them...

    Coop/Cage Pictures? - Deep Litter

Question for those having cages/coops over the ground. I have mine over some grass, and wanted to move it as little as possible. It´s an area of 80cmx70cm (a bit over 5 square foot I think) for just 3 females. What can I do to break down the droppings in the grass? Is there anything non-toxic...

    Quails stopped laying

Thanks everyone for the reassuring messages. Here reporting from day 4 without eggs, we´ll see how long this goes. A couple of days after their arrival, also based on some feedback received here, I doubled their space. And in the new area there was a lavender bush, that they just happen to love...

    Quails stopped laying

Should I wait for them fo recommence to move around the coop? Should I try to make water/feed/dustbath visits less often, or do those not matter?

    Quails stopped laying

So 5 days ago I got 3 45-day old female quails from a quail egg farm. The move is an upgrade - from an overcrowded cage, to a spacious on the ground space, with dust bath included. The first couple of days I got a couple of eegs daily, then just one, and the last couple of days I got zero. They...

Is it possible to introduce 1 quail to a small flock?

Does that apply as well to adding a female to a small group of only females?
