'cleaning' their beaks on the grass -- what is that?

Two of mine will jump on my shoulders after snacktime and use my shirt for their napkin. Guess I am useful for something!!

    Egg with no shell? (Picture)

Thanks, going to set them up with a pan tomorrow. I started thinking about it, and I rarely see them scratching. They go straight to their sandbox and peck at it.

    Egg with no shell? (Picture)

That's exactly what I found this morning too. I cover their yard with the oyster shell about once every 2 weeks. Should they be getting more than that? We have 4 BR.

Little advice for first egg please...

I thought someone got to it before me and tried to eat it. But when I looked at it, the edge was perfectly even. I would suspect if someone had gotten to it, the egg edge would be a little ragged looking. It would be like if you cut a stocking, how the cut edge rolls up a bit. Guess she...

Little advice for first egg please...

My BR just laid her first egg, kind of. It was only a half shell, almost rubbery, but there evidently was a yolk inside because it was in the nesting material. I brought the shell in to examine it. At first I thought it collapsed, but on closer inspection, the edge of the shell was rolled...

So...this morning there were a few cows at my fence

The field directly behind my house has a billboard with the two cows "Brake for chicken." Thank goodness it faces the other way or I would have to ask someone to change the sign!!!!

    Is this good enough??

Got good ventilation for them, front to back and side to side. So, I guess we are as good as we can get, plenty of shade, water, ventilation, and a healthy supply of grapes and corn for snacking.

    Is this good enough??

Oh, that is where we put the waterer, tucked up underneath the house. I also have their cake pan filled with water under there to soak their feet. Then I have water in the coop, in case someone wakes up thirsty during the night (I'm the only person in the world who thinks they would do that).

    Treats chickens DON'T Like

I plan on posting the list of treats on their fence just so they can SEE what they like to eat. So far we are stuck on grapes, rice, corn, and cornbread. Everything else I get dirty looks and my shoes pecked.

    Is this good enough??

Only 4 barred rocks, so they have plenty of room (until I walk in, then I need more room cause they are glued to me) and water. Bowl in the house, waterer, and a cake pan full.

    Is this good enough??

I am seriously considering it. They never go into the coop. The roof is made of the opaque corrugated fiberglass/plastic (?), so it is too warm for them. They stay under the coop and only go in at bedtime from what I have seen.

    Is this good enough??

It is never in full sun. That picture is about 11 a.m. The sun moves over the coop about 1 p.m. and then it is back in the shade. We go out about every 2 hours and spray down the yard to keep the ground cool, in addition to water bottles scattered underneath. Was thinking about building the...

    Is this good enough??

I hope this worked. This is our coop. There is plenty of shade, but the temperature has hit 100 this week right around 2 p.m. They have a waterer, a pan of water, and I throw frozen bottles twice a dayunder the house. At night I place a 1 gallon milk jug in the coop. I have seen them...

Does anyone else feel guilty eating chicken in front of your chickens?

I leave my blind open so I can see my BRs from the kitchen and we usually eat at the island in the kitchen. Second weekend they were there we got a barbque, I ordered chicken as usual. Sat down to eat, looked out the window, got up closed the blind. Son and hubbie were laughing like idiots...

    HOT WATER !!!!!!

kuntrygirl--I am in Lafayette. I have been freezing water in Magnalites and putting the blocks out at 9:30 and then at 2:00. Mine are in the shade a good part of the day, but I checked their water yesterday at noon, and it was still cool. Is there any way you could freeze a couple of smaller...

Anyone use rice hulls as bedding?

I am new to this, but I have used rice hulls in the garden one year, and don't do it. I attracted every bug in a 20 mile radius. Which I realize chickens like bugs, but I don't know if you would not end up with the wrong type of bugs.

    Advice (again!!) please.

Springchickens--I know everyone was saying to separate the new chickens for awhile, so I was not sure if I would have to build another smaller coop for the new birds until we knew they were healthy. Of course, that would just make it easier to keep adding new birds, may want to rethink that...

    Advice (again!!) please.

I have 4 barred rocks, about 13-14 weeks old. Found out I really like having them. So does my DH. He bought them from a gentleman at work. So, he brings him home last weekend, goes back to work, met another gentleman who raises chickens. He raises Americaunas (forgive spelling). So, in...
