HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

I absolutely agree that a source like this can be an excellent stockpile of genetic material. We also need to remember that Duane ran a HATCHERY, and while he may have selected a bit more carefully towards the standard, his breeding flocks would have been very similar to what we see in the...

    Chicken Breeding Projects, For 2020!

My primary goal is to put together my first breeding pens working towards Houdans that fit historic descriptions of size, weight, and performance.

    Hatchery Houdans

I noticed Meyer is advertising their Houdans as "New" this year. I'm verrrrrrry curious. Might have to check it out. I have a suspicion.

Lavender-Based Leghorn Breeding & Improvement Discussion

I just realized that I'll be able to make poufy-headed "porcelain" laying mutts with isabel leghorns and mottled Houdans and my former determination to stick to one breed evaporated. :D

HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

Yeah i wouldn't feel comfortable selling hatching eggs or chicks, either. If I'm going to set it and hatch it I'm going to grow it out so i can select from it. Years and years down the road when I'm seeing consistency in my lines and know i can get what i need for the next breeding season...

    Duckwing Leghorns

I just had a brain fart, keeping the two lines separately to breed for ideals in each gender is called double mating? Or does that mean something else?

    Duckwing Leghorns

The two varieties of browns were BUILT on and developed because of breeding for cockerel lines and pullet lines... light browns are commonly called the most beautiful hens of all of our APA breeds while the dark browns were developed to really let the gem tones of the cock birds shine. I don't...

    Duckwing Leghorns

Don't all the top US lt brown and dark brown breeders still do hen lines/cock lines? I thought it was necessary in duckwing patterns because of the way our standards were written. I think to get the best-colored birds of each gender in the Isabels we'd have to do the same.

Lavender-Based Leghorn Breeding & Improvement Discussion

GUESS WHAT!!! Fricassee broke his toe! Little jackass attacked the dogs through the fence while they were looking at him and I think it got hung up or something. I thought about trying to set it back but... that seems outside of my area of expertise in the fine art of Chicken Medicine. :( I hope...

Lavender-Based Leghorn Breeding & Improvement Discussion

I do look for that smooth topline, personally, and have picked my favorite hen of the three I have in large part based on that. I find I tend to prefer a slightly lower tail set than what the "ideal" is shown as being here, and I see that was one sentiment echoed in many of the judges' comments...

HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

The issue has always been marketing, whether that's what it was called or not. The well-known poultry keepers that were networked and made themselves visible and talked their birds up built reputations. There were likely plenty of birds or breeds that were just as good that fell by the wayside...

But isn't it still just a less saturated light brown?

Wow, how did you get those colors into your program? Do you have pictures?

Lavender-Based Leghorn Breeding & Improvement Discussion

You know... you'll get golden cockerels if you breed lavender to silver. :D What's the attraction to golden anyway? It's always struck me as just a less saturated light brown (which is what it is, I guess.) You just like softer colors? Isabel is as ultra-soft as it gets. :D In all...

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Interesting. I've never really paid attention to that variety before. I know I'm positively DREADING working with the mottling on Houdans. Mottling is very difficult to get right, it seems, because it changes with each molt, etc and I feel like, at least in the Houdans, people get so wrapped up...

Lavender-Based Leghorn Breeding & Improvement Discussion

The more I read, the more I believe that crossing back to black should NOT be *necessary* to improve color and would do little more than mask the lavender-linked feather quality issues from what I can tell. I believe improving the tone and pattern of these birds would best be accomplished by...

    Houdans

Champion Houdans at this past weekend's Andrezieux Bouthéon 2019. Courtesy Yvan Riv via Facebook. I find myself quite thankful that we don't do the leaf comb here! I really don't care much for it.

Discussing Chicken Breeds Based on Emotions Rather Than Facts

There are probably lines of Australian Shepherds that retrieve ducks far better than some of the lines of Labrador Retrievers I've seen. If you want to do a meta-analysis based on facts and data and research, ask for that. Otherwise it's pointless, because a hatchery Barred Rock is NOT even...

Discussing Chicken Breeds Based on Emotions Rather Than Facts

The problem is that your question is a poll based on anecdotal evidence, personal experience, and potential dramatically different needs and expectations and each of these people may be entirely telling the truth about *THEIR* birds. Not to mention that five different lines of the same breed...
