injured spur-like growth on the leg of my barred rock hen

I currently have four hens. Two Rhode Island Reds and two Barred Rocks. They have been with us for a few years, and they are older. I know they are all hens. Today we were out back dusting them for mites. My husband was hold one of my Barred Rocks, and we noticed she had spur-like growths on...

eeeeek bugs on my baby's :(

We just went through a terrible mite infection. We ate the eggs the whole time, but getting rid of the mites was the hugest pain. I tried everything from spraying with bleach to spraying with neem to sprinkling diatomaceous earth. We eventually got extreme and washed our coop in kerosene (yuck!)...

    unexpected chicken death! ack!

I have six chickens (had six chickens, now I have five). One is pretty old, but she is the head chicken, and she is feisty as ever. Two I got as pullets 2.5 years ago, and three are Rhode Island Reds that I got as pullets this past winter. Today I went out to lock the chickens in for the night...

sick hen with vague symptoms that don't seem to be spreading to others

No, the vet didn't recommend any meds. She didn't really know what was going on with her. I don't either. an inexplicably sick hen with vague symptoms that haven't spread

Okay, I went out with a flashlight to look at her. As I opened the roost door, she was scratching her neck, but when I looked under her wings, I saw nothing unusual but a bunch of chicken flesh with thin feather coverage. It doesn't look like mites, but maybe I don't know what I am looking for...

sick hen with vague symptoms that don't seem to be spreading to others

I have a sick hen. She has seemed sick for a while, but it is pretty unclear what is wrong with her. She is energetic, eats a lot, has a full crop, is able to pass waste and still lays eggs. However, she is losing feathers and not growing them back, and she is wasting away, getting skinner and...

an inexplicably sick hen with vague symptoms that haven't spread

Thanks! It is nice to have replies so quickly! What a great resource. Regarding the mites, do I need to go out at night with a flashlight? I am happy to try anything, but my husband has looked her over and hasn't seen anything. Does looking at night help? What am I looking for?
