Can You Feed Chickens Egg Whites?

The other day I forgot about a pot of eggs that I put on the stovetop to boil and accidentally over cooked them. I ended up shelling them and breaking them up into pieces and feeding them to my chickens. They loved it! I was wondering if it is possible to feed the carcass of a cooked chicken...

Transitioning from roofed to roofless run

Could you move the coop back away from the road? I would be very upset about no roof. The chickens really need to be dry when they sleep. Plus in the winter, being wet and cold is not a good environment. If you could move the coop away from the road, then the roof would not be a zoning issue.

    Stopped laying in nest boxes

The hens are all laying and they lat their eggs in the nesting boxes and not always the same one either. I don’t have fake eggs in the boxes. My RR was the first to start laying and she was originally getting in a nesting box every time. It’s been in the last week or so that she has left her...

    Stopped laying in nest boxes

I have 6 hens, 1 RR, 2 PR, and 3 heritage breed. The RR was the first to start laying back in late July and the others eventually followed suit. We have 3 nesting boxes and they all pretty much have broken in all three. Suddenly in the past several weeks, I have been finding the RR’s egg in...

    New Barred Rock Rooster Questions

We adopted a Barred Rock rooster this week to be the Romeo and hero to our 6 hens. He is 4 months old. This morning I was expecting to hear him usher in the day, but there was silence. What is the average age for a Barred Rock rooster to come “into his own”? He has no fancy feathers growing...

How to "keep" Sunflower seeds grown in my garden for winter feed for chickens.

I have grown a number of sunflowers in my garden and after harvesting them, I wanted to know if I should roast the seeds before feeding them to my chickens. I am worried that the raw seeds could mold and spoil over time, and I don't want that to happen. I want to have them to feed to my...

    HUGE egg!

The size and the regularity of the eggs will vary during the first couple months of the ladies getting into a cycle of laying. I have gotten HUGE eggs that would not fit in the cartons as well. My family fights over them, wanting to have the double yokes to eat. Hang in there.

My hen has been pacing back and forth in the run for hours, and has not laid an egg yet even though it's 11:17 am!

You try walking around feeling something big and round pressing on your hind end and tell me you wouldn't be squawking too 😁🐣

20 plus weeks andstill no eggs

I bought my RIR in early March and just this week, one has started to lay, but she still isn't laying every day. Just be patient. Make sure you have good private nesting boxes, 1 box for every 3 chickens and sooner than later, you will be getting eggs.

    Feeding chickens meat scraps

We have been feeding them the 17 year cicadas that have begun to emerge from the ground here in Virginia. I have tried to feed them berries that I defrosted from my freezer, but they just looked at them. How do you get them to eat the veggie scraps? Do you just drop them in the ground?

    Feeding chickens meat scraps

Can chickens eat meat scraps from the kitchen table? I have a bunch of scraps from chicken tenders that I was going to throw away, but thought I might ask about feeding the scraps to my ladies. I don’t want to do something that isn’t healthy or correct ... so anyone who has an opinion or some...

when to switch from starter to grower?

What is the point of the medicated feed? Is the medicated feed just fed for a period of time “before” the chickens start laying? Thank you

How do you get pullets to use a perch?

Hubby put a small branch mounted on 2x4 blocks in their brooding pen. Some used it, some didn’t. It’s just another pattern of youngin’s having to be taught and reminded over and over again how and what to do to make their lives safer and easier ... some listen fast and some don’t. I will keep...

    Cups vs Nipples??

The chicks have to move the toggle over to get water to come out of the nozzle. It is not as easy as it may seem. My chickens never figured it out. I would have to push the toggle over every hour or so to make sure they were getting water. Everyone I have talked to says the nipples are the...

    Watering system all set up...

We live in Roanoke, Virginia. I moved here following the state slogan "Virginia is for Lovers" back in 1989, when I fell in love with a hardworking country boy who was raised in the southwest portion of the state. We have been on our 5 acres for almost 25 years now. I am SO SORRY you lived in...

    Watering system all set up...

I see that you are in Florida, so you obviously don't have to worry about freezing in the winter. Was wondering if during your project, if you read any recommendations for preventing the possibility of freezing on a system like yours? We live in Virginia and it does get cold enough to freeze...

    Doing the chicken thing again

This coop is temporary. You can see off in the distance on the left, the pernament coop is being built. We had to do something to get the pullets out of my basement! I could not handle the dander and the chicken poop any longer ;). We are going to keep this one up to use for chicks and...
