Is it too late for my Pekin and if so to do

The ad might be a good option. Or check FB to see if there are any local poultry groups you could join. Surely someone would be kind enough to help you (and the duck) out. I saw another post on here about digging a hole, putting the animal in it and then shooting the head with a .22. My...

    Egg Bound?

I learned on here a few days ago that brught green poop can be a sign that your chicken has only bile in its system (from not eating), and it is very serious. My favorite hen had this last week, and I tube fed her and thought she was on the mend then a couple days later she was lethargic again...

    Coyotes

I would definitely get her a friend if the babies are too young for her to interact with. Of course you will want to quarantine any new birds before putting them in the flock. I'm sorry to hear about the coyotes killing your flock :(

Official BYC Poll - What Do Your Chickens Live In?

@Chicklady707 Our True Green Whitings like to show off their straight jump skills over our 5.5 foot tall fence too. I'm thinking of using the netting over the top for awhile until they learn... :)

Official BYC Poll - What Do Your Chickens Live In?

Ours have a shed that has been modified into a coop. They have a fenced in run that is approximately 1/4 acre? and then they free range daily on our 7.5 acres.

Is it too late for my Pekin and if so to do

I'm so sorry for your loss. I would say maybe the hawk damaged the spinal cord in the attack? I don't know if you saw the attack or not, but if so, do you know if he was dropped? We had a chicken attacked by a hawk (it was caught on video), and she fought back and he dropped her (but we...

    Egg sizes over time

@Ridgerunner Thank you--that was fascinating! And good to know. I haven't weighed eggs in awhile, but my husband weighed a couple tonight, and it looks like our average pullet egg is up to around 42 grams now, after about 9 weeks of laying. Maybe we'll get to large eventually, lol

    Egg sizes over time

Following this thread with interest! :) We first got chickens 2.5 years ago (AmberLinks, ISA Browns, Golden Comets, Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks and Black Australorps). All laid big eggs. This spring, we ordered chicks since our older girls had slowed laying, but we ordered Cream Legbars...

    Do chickens nap?

Mine nod off outside, especially is it's warm and they're just lying around. If she's looking puffed up or not being interested in food then I would start to wonder about illness

    Abandoned Chickens in My Yard!

What a kind soul you are for taking them in and trying to help them. Thankfully no one has dropped off animals to us like that, though we did have someone ask us to take in their 2 remaining hens out of a 65 count flock that had been all but decimated by several predator attacks. Those two (a...

Trying to decide if my lethargic hen needs to be culled :(

Thank you. My husband ended up using the .22 to put her down, so I couldn't fathom taking her in for a necropsy (I know this sounds silly but I couldn't stand the thought of seeing her after she'd been shot, and I would have had to be the one to drive her there since my husband will be at work...

Trying to decide if my lethargic hen needs to be culled :(

Thank you everyone for all your help. She pooped twice overnight, and there was no more blood, so I'm thinking maybe that was from the NSAID. She has been sleeping all day, and only opens her eyes if I move her. Her respirations are slow. If she does not pass soon my husband is going to put...

Comment by 'melissamc' in article 'Hens Passing Away Due to Old Age: What to Expect'

How long did it take? My favorite hen (an ISA Brown) is in this process right now and I don't know whether to let me husband euthanize her with a .22 or let her die peacefully in her sleep. She hasn't had any water since yesterday evening (she refuses), and all day today she's been sleeping...

Trying to decide if my lethargic hen needs to be culled :(

I am certain she had sour crop previously (a few months ago) because she had the nasty breath and the liquid coming up when she would dip her head, but she hasn't shown any signs since then. I treated that at the time with ACV in the water and yogurt because there was no vet around here that...

Trying to decide if my lethargic hen needs to be culled :(

Thank you. I gave her the dose of Corid, but she would not eat hardly anything and fell asleep while I was trying. I am going to see how she is in the morning and then put her out of her misery if she is not showing any improvement. Thank you for all of your help!

Trying to decide if my lethargic hen needs to be culled :(

No, no vitamins. I only put the corid in their water and made sure it was the only water they had available.

Trying to decide if my lethargic hen needs to be culled :(

Thank you. I've been crying off and on all day long just thinking about it. I just don't want her to suffer if she can't be healed...

Trying to decide if my lethargic hen needs to be culled :(

I did treat with the whole flock with Corid about two weeks ago even though I hadn't seen any reason to (I was just trying to eliminate any potential issues in the flock even though she was the only one acting off). Is there a dose for one chicken to give directly?
