I filled them to the inside rim with dirt and put in a mixture of wheat and grass seeds. The wheat sprouts very quickly and gives them something to peck at through the mesh while the grass grows.
I have put herbs like mint, parsley and oregano in other tyres. This looks good but isn't as popular. 😆
I'm so pleased for you both!
Looking at her now you would never know that there had been anything wrong.
You are a great chicken keeper. Thank you for posting Ester's journey. If I ever have a similar problem and need advice I know where to come! :thumbsup
Sounds like a stressful time for you. :hugs I'm glad Big Boy is doing better.
Have you seen this article on beak repair?

Hope Hazel gets better soon.
I just had an idea MJ.
Have you thought of growing a vine over part of the Funrun?
You could plant for fruit like grape, kiwi or passionfruit, or for flowers like wisteria or Wonga wonga. If it's deciduous the chooks would still get lots sun in winter.
😟:hugs
Do you have anything to distract yourself? A good movie, book or audio book?
Here's a story.
When I was around 7 years old I was rough housing with my big brother while my parents were out and I fell. My brother and sisters (all older than me) didn't believe that I had hurt myself and...
You've done amazingly micstrachan. Well done to you and Ester.
Good idea. Just measure a cup out for her and pour it back into the measuring cup when you get home to check the difference.
Brilliant layout with the Jacaranda in the middle. It will give some nice shade in a few years.
In the mean time you could put some flowers or herbs around it, but you'd have to fence it off from the chooks.
I like the veggie garden idea. Looks like you have lots of sun there. Will they be raised beds?
I've heard good things about these, but I haven't used one myself.
Or make your own with left over building material.
I think I'm really enjoying your build and planning too MJ! 🤣
Asking the nursery people is always a good idea. ☺👍 Just keep in mind what you want the plants for eg. shade, fruit, flowers, scented foliage or cover.
The herbs my chooks like the most are comfrey and flat leafed or Italian parsley. They both like full sun.
Here are some pics of my set up...
