Margot and Poppy or Martin and Pops

So I have a calico Cochin bantam and a black wackadoo frizzle-looking thing. Both are a little over five weeks old. I’m pretty sure I know the answer already, but seeing as I’ve never hatched either breed before…what do we got here, folks?

    Wet Feed

Hi, my name is Mandy and I’m kind of a moron. My flock is spending their first week in their outside coop/run and they’re loving life. Yesterday, we all experienced their first rainstorm. They did just fine, but I had a little water that pooled on the roof. Their feed is hung right under the...

    Keeping Chicks with Pullets?

I’ve got three pullets and two cockerels that are seven weeks old and already in the outside coop. I also have two three week old chicks - one bantam Cochin and one frizzle. At what age can I mix the little nuggets in with the big girls?

    Supplemental light?

It’s set up in the corner of my yard inside their run, which against an eight foot wooden fence - so they’re completely blocked from wind on two sides. The coop door faces east. I set up one of those cheap battery operated push lights last night to see what they would do…the hens trotted right...

    Supplemental light?

Thank you so much! Ive been a bit concerned about ventilation too - so far I've added hinges to the coop roof so the entire top opens. The latch allows me to prop it open an inch or so if needed. These guys are brand spanking new the run/coop, so I'm making adjustments as they tell me what they...

    Supplemental light?

The dudes are a BCM and Easter egger - both are pretty much feathered out. The BCM is still getting in some saddle feathers on his rear end though. The ladies are an Easter egger, barred Plymouth, and a cinnamon queen. They’re all fully feathered. I have a brooder plate in the coop right now -...

    Supplemental light?

Is there ever a threshold for adding heat? I’m in GA and it’s getting in the 30s. I know they’re cold hearty birds, but should I worry about them at seven weeks?

    Supplemental light?

I’m a very new chicken mama and I have a tiny flock of three pullets and two cockerels making their transition to the outside coop/run. I’ve got a small hutch type coop. They’ve got a light in the run, but when I put them up at night, it’s dark in the coop. I’ve toyed with the idea of adding a...

One of these things is not like the other…

They’re little stud muffins for sure - the BCM keeps getting more handsome too. I’ll keep them as long as the neighbors are ok with it and they both mind their manners. At this point they *seem* like BFFs, but time will tell if their relationship can survive puberty.

Luckily I’ve also got a teeny calico cochin bantam and a goofy little black frizzle that hatched two weeks back. Both feathering out like crazy so fingers crossed for no more cock-a-doodle dudes!!

One of these things is not like the other…

So I’m a first time chicken mama and hatched these two goobers from eggs. One is an Easter egger and a BCM. They turned six weeks yesterday and I’ve already heard what to my inexperienced ears sounds like a little crow…though isn’t it REALLY early for that? I attempted to wing sex them at a...

Official BYC Poll: Where Did You Get Your Coop & Run From?

Started with a coop kit from Amazon but made some structural changes to it to make cleaning easier (and to ‘swank’ it up a bit). My run came from overstock and I did the same - added some extra hardware cloth a and a fence for some security, revamped the door a bit, planed a flower bed around...
