WOOHOOOO! Thanks, casportpony, and all who challenged my distance!
Well, looks like the hatch is over for me... out of 8 duck eggs, 3 hatched. Out of 15 chicken eggs, 4 hatched... late comer late yesterday afternoon, now in with the ducklings and other 3 chicks. Two cockerels, two pullets. Ducklings, won't know until 4-5 months from now! What fun! BTW, I...
I'm just holding off, as I didn't want to confuse the numbers. Day 28/21 is actually tomorrow for me, so we're still waiting. But I DID have 4 (3 ducklings/1 chick) that were overachievers... I put them in lockdown on Wednesday afternoon, and after I got them all out of the turner, I noticed I...
Getting ready to put mine into lockdown tonight. 8 duck eggs active, drawn down, and shadows in the air cells! 10 chicken eggs, fully dark (Cream Legbars, Lavender Orps, Welsummers) so the shells are hard to detect other than the air cells. :fl
I agree... it may seem high to you, @fjjohnson4818, but consider that maybe they'll think twice about letting their dogs run the neighborhood free again, when they get the bill that they've promised to honor.
I, too, lost half my flock, including my only roo, due to a dog (or dogs) tearing...
I've only had to do it on a rare occasion when I've determined that it's the same hen that is flying out of the run (it's open at the top of an 8-ft wall). She'll fly to the cross-beam of the man-access door, then figure it out how to fly from there to the top of the wall, and then over. I'll...
I've got a claim in with USPS, since it wasn't the shipper's fault that they came in busted, which is more than what I paid for them in the 1st place. I notified the shipper, and she's offered to replace them, if I just pay for the shipping charges, so I told her we'll see how these 8 develop...
I'm in... just set 8 Khaki Campbell eggs (was supposed to be 15, but USPS shook the box, and 7 eggs were busted... not sure if the 8 are now viable, but we'll know by this Saturday, since I set them last Saturday night (12/5), to see if any develop. But I also have 15 (Cream Legbar, Lavendor...
I live in a rural community, as well. We don't have the co-op security lights, as we live inside the township limits, so we have street lights. However, with it being 20 feet high, and you'll have a roof on the coop, that will block most of the light. In fact, as the days get shorter, you'll...
Yea, even here in North Dakota, where we're at now... we live in a tiny rural community. Only commercial business here is the local bar, where you can buy prepared food as well as alcohol, but everything else that is commercial is either agricultural or oil industry-related (we're just inside...
Both hubby & I would return to California in a heartbeat, if the leadership of the state would change and much of the restrictions would be removed... let the people be free instead of oppressed and overtaxed. That's one of the reasons why we left... we're conservatives, always have been, and...
I'm about an hour west of Minot, just off Hwy 2. No, Comfort Glow (I used the wrong name) is an actual radiant quartz heater (it glows like a milkhouse style heater), whereas the Cozy Coop is a radiant panel. The Comfort Glow is adjustable from 59F (lowest temp) to 89F. It has 3 settings in...
I hear ya on the weather in California is different from area to area. I grew up on the peninsula in the Bay Area, but lived for 11 years, after leaving my parents' home, and lived in Sacramento. Even in the hottest time of the year for the Bay Area, when I returned to visit, I was wearing...
Your wording led me to believe she was less than a year old. And yes, my comment was an 'opinion', so glad you took it as such. Sometimes people get offended thinking we're trying to be superior or more knowledgeable, when we are not. We're working off our own experiences.
I will opine on this, as well. I was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area... your chickens do NOT need supplemental heat in this area. I would be more concerned with the humidity level rather than the heat. The drier, the better. Knowing the fog increases the humidity in the area...
My set up is a thermostat controlled radiant heater, set up on a thermocouple that doesn't activate until it gets below 45 degrees F. Then the heater is set up to come on when it hits 32 degrees F when the water would be freezing up, like Spot1984... my concern is the keeping the water...
Just for future reference. If you don't know if your chicks were vaccinated or not, then don't feed them the medicated feed. If they were vaccinated, the medicated feed will make the vaccinations ineffective... they cancel each other out. So at this point, continue on non-medicated feed. I'd...
