I am in between flocks, but I also keep horses. I leave them turned out as long as possible in the Fall before they are stalled at night, mostly to keep their feet dry, and they grow a very good coat for the winter. We have had several winters that have dipped to -20F degrees for days at a time...

Just so you know, we are the 4th owner of this property in ~100 years. The first 2 were farmers, 2nd farmer broke up the property, and I have NO IDEA who changed the chicken house into a tool shed, just wasn't me.

Thanks, @Ridgerunner!! :hugs I hope that you appreciate that I didn't post any pictures over at TEG. The coop has two built in ventilation circles on the nest box side. I Have been leaving the windows mostly open--they can be partially or fully opened or fully closed, also on the next box side...

    Flock murdered, WARNING GRAPHIC PHOTOS!!!!!

I should apologize for the rapid fire of this thread, BUT, this is my one week's worth of a chance to get a handle on fixing my problem. Here is aNOTHER wrinkle. I studied patandchickens articles and links years ago, and the Reason for leaving the pop door open 24/7/365 was ventilation. I...

New puppy love: Beware of bringing home those cute deceiving predators!

I agree!! If I was really hungry, I'd be thinking of eating them, too. Don't misunderstand, I only trust my 12yo dog with chickens. Eva has brought home a couple of rabbits to eat, and she especially loves turkey leftovers. They will act differently if you aren't looking. So, YOU need to...

What will kill mice and not chickens?

I do NOT advise poison. Lots of animals eat mice. When I kept my chickens in a stall in the barn, the chickens ate baby mice any time they saw them. But, getting your chickens to solve your mouse problem is like getting your horses to eat all of the 1st year burdock. AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!! I...

Yeah, I moved here bc of my horses and how severe winter weather was making it almost impossible to care for them somewhere else. We have lived here for 20 years. The chickens came later. Hard to say who is more important, the horses, OR the cats and dogs. The chickens are, and have always...

Thanks for your thoughts! I am sticking with my run as is. I want to reinforce it. I may do well working with hardware cloth, but I am NOT a carpenter. Don't see me building a building like you describe. If I wanted that, I would clean up my 4 car garage, move to tools to that, and take the...

New puppy love: Beware of bringing home those cute deceiving predators!

Please don't get another dog, then. It really isn't "what pet is the best" contest. Like what you like. The ONLY dog I couldn't retrain would take off and run for 3 days, then come back hungry. Dogs that attack humans are pretty much not retrainable, either. Surprisingly, most horses Are...

New puppy love: Beware of bringing home those cute deceiving predators!

When I HAD my birds, Eva would sometimes slip into the run with me, mostly sniffing around. She LOVED to run at the chickens while OUTside the run and watch them scatter. She has a bad habit of chasing the cats, but That has a plus side. ALL of my 7 cats are climbing trees and posts all the...
