Blue/Slate/Grey skin colour: mutt breeding and genetics question

Hello all, This is Astrid: She is one of a batch of easter egger eggs that I bought off kijiji. The hens were apparently a collection of ameraucana/easter eggers, light brahmas and dark brahmas. The rooster was a very handsome Ameraucana-looking boy with colouring similar to the roo in...

    Janoel 12 incubator help!

I have the j12 as well. I found that adding 100ml at a time keeps the humidity way too high. I've been adding only about a tbsp at a time every day or two and that seems to keep it between 45 and 55, and I haven't had any trouble keeping temp steady. Funny how we can all have such different...

OEGB and something tiny with a rose comb: colour predictions?

Interesting - I was wondering if there might be some sebright based on the rose comb and his down coloring (he was mostly back with a brownish face when we first got him.) Thanks for your input!

OEGB and something tiny with a rose comb: colour predictions?

I swear their combs turned red the day after we got them home! It was like magic - from androgynous balls of fluff to definite cockerels over night. At the moment they are inseparable, so I'm hoping if we keep them away from any hens they'll continue to get along. If not... I'll just have to...

OEGB and something tiny with a rose comb: colour predictions?

I picked up these two little bantam chicks at an auction recently, listed as OEGBs. What I am wondering about is their colour patterns. I've been trying to learn about OEGB colour patterns (which left my head spinning) and chances are they are something nonstandard anyway. But I think they're...

    Bachelor Pad

I don't have any helpful advice, but I had to chime in to note that I love the name Mr. Darcy, and that you'd probably have an easier time getting rid of him if you changed his name to Mr. Wickham.

Easter Egger(?) - Pullet or Cockerel?

Well, gee, that's looking pretty unanimous, doesn't it? I guess I'm up to 5 roosters, 3 hens. Oh, well. Buttercup, eh? Interesting. We had certainly noticed that he/she had a weird comb, but I just figured it was a messed up pea comb. You learn something new every day. Anyway, thanks for...

What's your opinion on this EE?

It's so hard to tell at this age, isn't it? My guess would be cockerel, because it looks like there are some reddish patches starting on his/her wings, but that could be an effect of the lighting, too. (I am very new at this, so take my opinion with a large dash of salt )

Easter Egger(?) - Pullet or Cockerel?

Okay, I think I have most of my 9-week-old chicks figured out, and up until recently I was fairly confident I had four boys and four girls. But Cookie here has me wondering. Her comb is larger and redder than her 'sisters' - but I wound up with kind of a mixed bag of chicks, and it's possible...

5-6 wk old chicks: Orpingtons? Ameraucanas? Marans? Mutt chickens?

@ WyandotteIndeed: Wow! She does look similar! Very pretty chickie. I had the same thought that there might be some silkie in there - there just aren't many common crested breeds, and I live in an area where rarer breeds are hard to come by, so the most common possibility just seems like the...

5-6 wk old chicks: Orpingtons? Ameraucanas? Marans? Mutt chickens?

Hi, sweetie! (Fluffyboo - the user, not the chicken - is my daughter.) Well, I guess the moral of the story is that when you find your chicks on Kijiji, be prepared for 'genetic soup.' I was thinking the same thing, looking at the different combs, leg colours, feather patterns, and so on. I...

5-6 wk old chicks: Orpingtons? Ameraucanas? Marans? Mutt chickens?

Thanks for your reply, and for the welcome. I had to google crested cream legbar, and I see what you mean - it would at least explain the funny little hats, and the coloring is very similar. Google also tells me that there is a farm not terribly far from me that raises CCRs, so it's not too...

5-6 wk old chicks: Orpingtons? Ameraucanas? Marans? Mutt chickens?

Aw... thank you! She's more than just a pretty face, too. She has to be the sweetest, calmest little chicken I've ever known. I just love her.

5-6 wk old chicks: Orpingtons? Ameraucanas? Marans? Mutt chickens?

Hi all, Early in July, I bought eight chicks from a local farmer. In theory, they were four pure BBS Orpingtons and four buff Orpington/Ameraucana cross. Now, I love my chickies and I have no intention of breeding or showing them, so really this is just for my own curiosity, but I'm starting...
