Sparrow Ministries - 01-06-2012 Cleaning room done!

It's been a while since we had any eggs to give away. For some reason my production dropped to 0 (that's ZERO) eggs for almost a month. In that time we did harvest about 12 roosters so I guess the shortening of the days, high temps and removing 12 rascals from the mix got the girls all...

    Plastic Poultry netting

I covered my runs with the plastic stuff to deter hawks from swooping in for a quick lunch. That has worked well and kept the chickens from getting out but here in S Ga the sun has deteriorated the plastic in less than two years. It is now so brittle it is falling to pieces. I won't buy this...

    Not laying

My experience is any changes in their environment or schedule will result in loss of egg production. Even a small thing like adding or reducing their run area will affect egg numbers. Geesh, girls are sooo overly dramatic..... On a lighter note, here is the real reason they aren't laying......

Sparrow Ministries - 01-06-2012 Cleaning room done!

Both sermons yesterday were based on this scripture: John 14:13 (New Living Translation) You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. We are still regularly giving away eggs here. Gave 4 dozen yesterday to the elderly folks in our...

Mike, It's really great to hear you had a visitor to church. That has to reaffirm your mindset. I am very happy for you. You have piqued my curiosity about the people you have met. Do tell! We are plugging away at still about a dozen a day. I have two broodies right now and I think they...

Sparrow Ministries - 01-06-2012 Cleaning room done!

Update... The biddies I hatched out the last of Feb are now out of the brooder and in the chicken house in their own subdivision and growing up fast. They are eating machines! I have 31 of those. Still plugging away at giving away our eggs. I am getting 12-13 a day now and we eat maybe a...

Sparrow Ministries - 01-06-2012 Cleaning room done!

I have donated a total of 22 dozen eggs to local folks and just gave 8 dozen to my church to be used to make potato salad for a fund raising barbecue. So far, folks in the church and at my job have kept me in empty egg cartons. I have 32 new babies I just hatched out that hopefully will...

I'm Sooo Sad, I just wanna Cry! UPDATE! UPDATE WE HAVE A PIP!!!

I'd say little peep needs a friend who is a little closer to his size! LOL! Any sign of another chick yet? So it seems the digital thermostat did a good job for you? Would you recommend them to others that are building incubators?

My 14 yo sons homemade Bator- questions??

That's some good thinking to put an incubator together from a bunch of throw away items. Very green of you. And it is aesthetically pleasing as well. Great job, kelsey. I still like that electronic thermostat the most! I will have one of those! Then I can build a home made incubator and...

My 14 yo sons homemade Bator- questions??

On humidity, I ran mine without any water for the first 16 days. It stayed between 30-50% the whole time. Then when I got to lockdown I wanted it between 60-70% so I squirted some water into a couple of the cups of the styro carton. About 10 minutes later the hum. climbed quickly. What...

My 14 yo sons homemade Bator- questions??

I had 14 eggs sitting in a styrofoam carton (10 on the lid and 4 in the cups) during lockdown. I put the carton in at lockdown but before that, they were in an LG egg turner. I'm not saying the eggs wouldn't hatch in styrofoam, but I though it very strange that my first 16 eggs to hatch out of...

My 14 yo sons homemade Bator- questions??

Some folks make their own wiggler from a sanwich baggie half filled with water and wrapped in half and held with rubber bands. Stick your therm. in the center. Also, I had poor hatching rate of eggs placed on styrofoam. I had 16 eggs hatch OFF the styro before one hatched ON the styro. Maybe...

LG still air as a hatcher????

I can tell you I just used an LG with an added computer fan for my first incubate/hatch. I hatched 32 eggs out of 36. I am very happy with my LG as either incubator and or hatcher. Put a couple books on the lid to be sure it seals good on the base and good luck!

    A couple cute egg pictures.

I can't take credit for the origination of the pictures, I received them in an email from a friend. I think the yolks have been photo shopped, while the eggs in carton would be easy enough to do on your own. I am thinking I will do that to the next dozen I give to a family with children, but...

When I finally unplugged the incubator, I only had 4 eggs that didn't hatch out of 36. That's an 89% hatch rate. I'll be sure to "high-five" my roo. I still had one with a huge chunk of shell stuck on the top/side of it's head. It was too heavy for the poor little thing to hold it's head up...

Great to hear the good news, nuts. If you get a chance, post a pic or two. I just had one more hatch and now the remaining 5 eggs show no sign of pips on this 23rd day. I will probably pull the plug(s) on the incubator as soon as the last one dries off well and move all 8 to the brooder with...

nuts4chickens, I feel so bad for you. I did the same thing by putting water in the styrofoam carton and I almost had my first chick fall asleep with it's head in the water. It is certainly a learning curve. Don't stop trying though. We'll all do some things different next time. Live and...
