It’s getting cold here! Ducks absolutely will NOT use their house!

Yes, please try to find a way to give them a bit more security at night. I'm sure you're doing the very best you can, but remember that "domestic" livestock do not have the natural instincts that their wild relations do, so they are even more vulnerable. Best of luck with getting them in! Oh...

What do you do with unwanted Cockerels ?

Please do not just "let them go" if you don't want them. They can easily get wounded from a predator and suffer an extremely long, painful death. That's not fair to the bird.

It’s getting cold here! Ducks absolutely will NOT use their house!

I had to "train" my ducks to use their coop; first, I put them in there, physically. Once they were settled down, I took a dish of their favorite treat, Cheerios. I did that for 2-3 nights in a row, rattling the bowl so they could hear the noise. After a few days, all I needed to do was...

    2017 Dixie Classic

Sounds like it was a fantastic show, as always. A good friend bred a beautiful RIR bantam, and gifted it to a boy he mentors; the bird placed reserve show champion! So proud of my good friend, Fred. :)

    Silver Pencilled Plymouth Rock

I need to get cockerels weighed myself. I have I think 5 or 6 that I held over in my final cull; I will keep the best 2 or 3, depending how they get through my last scrutinization of them (is that a word? Must not be, it's red underlined!). I'm just not seeing the length of topline that I...

    Silver Pencilled Plymouth Rock

Marcia, there is some problem with my website URL. I need to get it figured out! I wouldn't be ready to sell hatching eggs or stock just yet...I bred in Columbian to my flock and I'm not yet back to SPR phenotype. A good friend of mine (Scott Brazinski) breeds Columbians with excellent size...

    Silver Pencilled Plymouth Rock

Hello, all - I have been breeding SPR for a good many years and have found them most challenging to breed. They are most definitely not for the faint of heart, or for those wishing to "make their mark" on the poultry world. They have moved so far from the SOP it will take many years to get...

They're here! Welsh Harlequin, Golden 300 Hybrid, Black Swedish - Meet WO!

Gosh, I wish I could help. I k ow much more about chicken genetics than I do about ducks. Sorry! She's awful cute, though!! I wonder what khaki Campbells look like as ducklings? That might be a good place to start.

CS16 -- The Official Michigan Chicken Stock Information Thread for June 11, 2016

Folks, very sorry for the late notice, but I will be unable to make C-S this year. I'll very much miss catching up with good chicken friends, and will definitely miss the talk by the MSU person - thanks, Mary, for working so diligently to get that scheduled! If anyone records it, I would love...

CS16 -- The Official Michigan Chicken Stock Information Thread for June 11, 2016

I'm way, WAY behind in hatching this year - haven't even hatched off what I need for myself yet, so I won't have anything this year. Very sorry! (If you'd like to meet up late summer, shoot me a PM - I should have some stock later.)

Egg laid with hole in it [pics]

Hi, Laura - I never did find out why that hen laid eggs like that on occasion; I've had two Marans that laid like that in the past, I never used them for breeding purposes, and so I think I have culled that issue out of my flock, as I haven't had any more birds lay like that. Strange, huh...

Nicol Perry was working on bantam Black Copper Marans at one point, and doing quite well with them. I'm not sure if she's still working on them or not, Don would probably know....

That's very true. This is why it is best to try to collect eggs from on hen, since they are typically very close to the same color, shape, and sheen. Congrats on your win!!

CONGRATS, Blarney! You never know how yours compare unless you get them out there & show them. I'm surprised there weren't more White entries; I know several folks breeding them, but could be the off season for them (they are in Texas). Regardless, glad to hear you're getting your eggs - and...

    Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Awe...it's definitely nice to know you have some that don't need quite as much work. My Jersey Giants are those birds for me. When I'm feeling frustrated, I go hang with my Giants for a bit. It always pumps me back up and makes the others not see as daunting of a task to move forward. :)
