Chickens back toenail is cut in half and is bleeding!

Hey, everyone. One of my Plymouth Rock hens got her back toenail cut in half and it is bleeding (I don't know how it happened). She is about 1 year old and is currently molting. I found her in the nesting box area and I found blood on the perches, blood on the eggs, and I noticed that her feet...

Keeping the Coop Warm in the Winter

Hey, Guys! Just yesterday, we got our first snow, and it's one of the earliest snows we've had in a while. The temperature is currently in the '20s/30s and dropping. This is only my second year of raising chickens and last year we didn't have a cold winter. I'm not sure if I should put a heater...

    Huge loss of feathers

It sounds like she is molting. Most chickens lose a lot of feathers when molting (to make way for new feathers).

    Boy or girl?

It looks like a cockerel. It has too much red on its comb for that age.

Should I buy a rooster for my free-range hens?

Thanks for the info :). We already buried the dead chicken and it has been in there for more than a day now, so I don't think we are going to do a necropsy on it.

Should I buy a rooster for my free-range hens?

All of the pullets were being fed Dumor Poultry Starter feed (they are almost done with the bag). We are planning on going to Tractor Supply Co. this weekend to get a new feed for them called Dumor Poultry Grower/Finisher feed. Both the hens and the pullets have a powder vitamin mix in their waters.

Should I buy a rooster for my free-range hens?

We do not know what killed her. She was almost 3-months olds. We are probably going to get a necropsy done on her, soon.

Should I buy a rooster for my free-range hens?

Thank you! They sound so cute, if I do decide to get a rooster then I think you would be one of my top choices :) (I do live in VA).

I found a dead chicken at the top of the coop stairs. Help!

Is it okay if the chicken has a lot of dirt on it if I take it to get a necropsy? We buried it shortly after we found it dead (almost a day ago) :(.

Should I buy a rooster for my free-range hens?

I agree :). Although, I don't think we are going to be buying a rooster any time soon. We just made plans to build a new chicken run for our coop and we are going to be doing some remodeling on our house, but we are planning on getting some new chicks/chickens next spring :).

I found a dead chicken at the top of the coop stairs. Help!

Hey, everyone. Yesterday, I found one of my Sapphire Gem pullets dead (almost 3-months old) on the chicken coop stairs that lead into the main house :hit. Her body was in the main house, but her head was hanging over the stairs. The day before she seemed perfectly healthy (as did the other...
