The only chicken I ever had that was killed by a hawk was a Polish chicken. Her name was Ivy. We really loved her...but even with clipped wings she flew out of her protective area inside the barn. :rolleyes: I'm sure she couldn't see the hawk with her hat.
@BigBlueHen53 Where do you order your birds? I saw some online and they were $50 a chick..wow :rolleyes: and I was wondering if there were cheaper options or if that is just the price you pay for online birds.
I was just at Menards in New Albany and there was a red-tailed hawk circling the parking lot. It was so close overhead I was able to see it very clearly, but was shocked that it was in New Albany, in what I consider the city.
I'm no hawk expert but every red-tailed hawk I've ever seen is rather big. Big enough to say whoa...but maybe you have a juvenile.
Red shouldered hawks are smaller and they never bothered my chickens in 13 yrs of living right next to the woods. And I don't think hawks have a preference for color.
So glad she made it! I love guineas for sounding the alarm like they do and glad you were there to scare it off. I had to look up Sapphire Gems..very pretty breed.
And free ranging is nice but it's hard to keep them safe. Better an inconvenienced chicken than a dead one.
The current issue I have is making sure the chickens have access to clean water. My goose empties their water bowl plus they make it muddy water. I'm working on a solution to keep their water area separate.
