Chickens kicking out straw of nesting boxes

Ha! Probably, especially considering how many times I've been telling her to! And yes, two hard shell eggs. My brown leghorn laid two hard shelled eggs also when she laid two in one day.

Chickens kicking out straw of nesting boxes

Another crazy observation... I just went out to check to see if anyone else laid this afternoon and found another blue egg, this time in one of the boxes! I only have one Ameraucana so know it was the same girl who laid this morning. My brown leghorn laid two eggs in one day last summer so know...

Chickens kicking out straw of nesting boxes

@aart, I have two nesting boxes but the older three girls generally used just one. I don't expect, though, for them to start laying again until spring when the days start getting longer so hopefully the young ones can figure it out on their own. :)

Chickens kicking out straw of nesting boxes

Thanks everyone for your comments. I added a piece of wood to the front of the boxes and now the straw is staying in place even though it clearly is being rearranged. My Ameraucana laid outside the box again today so I put the fake egg back in. Hopefully she'll figure it out soon or perhaps the...

Chickens kicking out straw of nesting boxes

Thank you! I just peeked in the coop and saw two of the new pullets clearing out the boxes again. One of them was the one who laid yesterday. I did not have this problem with the older chickens when they started laying but will try adding an edge to the front to the boxes. Hopefully that will...

Chickens kicking out straw of nesting boxes

I hope someone can give me some insight into why my chickens keep removing the straw from their nesting boxes, which they have been doing for the last couple of weeks. I have three 18 month old chickens who are currently not laying (they just finished molting and we only have 9-1/2 hours of...

adding supplemental light at end of day

Quick question... With the days getting shorter I'm considering adding supplemental light to my coop to help with egg laying and am wondering if it's ok to add it to the end of the day rather than the beginning. I have a heavy duty exterior timer that goes on at dusk and can stay on 2, 4, 6 or 8...

Grower or layer feed for 23 week old pullets?

Great to hear that I can continue with feeding them the grower food with the oyster shells. I don't plan on having a rooster but if I ever do end up with one then he'll be fine too. Thank you for your help!

Grower or layer feed for 23 week old pullets?

I have three 23 week old pullets and three 18 month old chickens, all heritage breeds. The pullets have not started to lay yet and because of their breeds may not for a while yet. The pullets began living in the same coop/run with the older girls six weeks ago and I have been feeding all six...

Adding heat to coop in winter?

Thank you, @Northern Flights, this is great info. We have a generator specifically for our house so anything I'd use in the coop would be designated specifically for the heater's needs. I'm glad to hear that oil filled heaters don't post a high risk of fire. I have one of those already any was...

Adding heat to coop in winter?

Knowing the ideal temperature at which to add supplemental heat has always been my questions, as well. After last year's extremely cold temps I know that they will be ok to about -30F but I'm still debating if I should add extra heat and have it turn on when it drops below maybe -15 or so. I'm...

Adding heat to coop in winter?

I got my first chickens last spring and moved them out into their coop in July. They were fully feathered and old enough to go out earlier but I wasn't finished with the coop yet. By late fall they had grown lots of soft downy feathers, especially the Blue Orpington and Maran. Even though I was...

Adding heat to coop in winter?

I don't think it's necessary to line the coop with straw but since I built my coop out of pallets the recessed areas on the inside make it very easy to do so. I have a lot of ventilation in the coop and it stays very dry year round so I didn't have any issues with the straw retaining moisture...

    New pullets, night lights advice?

I live in central Minnesota and really like the idea of adding the string lights to the run to give a bit extra light. I'm wondering, though, is it necessary to also have a light in the coop? I don't have electricity in the coop but have a heavy duty extension cord that I already use in the...
