Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I've seen several discussions on sexing young Ameraucanas by their comb ("females only have one row of peas and males have three"), so I thought I'd share these pictures. A pea comb, by definition, is three rows of peas, so even if the females are less obvious, they should also have three rows...

You should start seeing the darker shanks on wheaten/blue wheaten by the time their adult feathering comes in. By 12-14 weeks, they should be blue.

Just dropping in to say "Hi" :) Here is one of my blue pullets, from the 3/6 or 3/13 hatch, that I'll definitely be watching grow out. :)

The Breeders Directory is usually updated monthly (although there was a gap while we were putting together the new Handbook of about 6 weeks) and is about to be updated this week. Of course, the information contained is only as good as what is reported, but we make every effort to validate the...

My time here on backyardchickens is coming to a close. My duties, hobby, and responsibilities leave me little enough time and I haven't been active here in a while. For anyone that wants to reach me, my email is [email protected]

The Ameraucana Breeders Club did not "fork in two". 21 people resigned in 2015 over a dispute over the 2014 election and started a new club, out of 179. We are now over 300 members and growing.

While it is possible to breed back to correct muffs and beards, why re-invent the wheel? There are several breeders that have gorgeous self-blues available now. @pips&peeps @OnceInaBlueMoon @RavynFallen are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head. You can find more on the...

Thank you for quoting that, John. So you are admitting that you received your start in bantams from Mike Gilbert, one year after they were accepted by the ABA?

Interesting reading, from 1989. Particularly the article, "How to Increase the Vitality of My Flock" by John Blehm, page 5 http://www.ameraucanabreedersclub.org/docs/bulletins/ABC%20Bulletin%201989%20vol%2011%201.pdf Of course, this was written 6 years after all eight varieties of the...

And lets not forget Don Cable - he and Mike Gilbert were the original founders of the Ameraucana Bantam Club, which later became the Ameraucana Breeders Club and is still going strong today - nearly 40 years later. For anyone wanting to research the history of the Ameraucana, you can read what...

Cute chicks! I know you're thrilled to get started with them. :) Just for historical accuracy and to give credit where credit is due, Harry Shaffer also created his own line of lavenders, aka self-blue, at about the same time that John Blehm and Michael Muenks were working on their line...

While that may have been true 40-50 years ago, I doubt that it is any longer. Most Easter Eggers and Olive eggers are bred from one of the blue egg laying breeds, mixed with a non-blue egg laying breed. The original "EEs" from which the Araucana and Ameraucana were derived have long since been...
