    Are these eggs hatching?

I think I'll give it a couple more days and see what happens. The terrible thing is, I don't really need more chickens (7 in town is plenty), but I think I will be disappointed if they are duds . . . I'll be tempted to go to TSC and get some day olds to put under her . . . is this what they...

    Are these eggs hatching?

I'll try to make a long story short. I am a complete novice at hatching eggs, but my standard cochin went broody a couple weeks ago, and after several days of taking her off the nest each day for some treats, attempting to get her back in action, I decided to give her some of my sisters fertile...

Australorp eggs---only medium (almost small) sized.

I have a black australorp who it seemed took several weeks to get past the pullet size egg . . . she molted maybe 3 months into laying, and when she started laying again after her first molt, her eggs were darker and much larger. Who knows . . . give it time.

    Coop Space Dilemma-pics

Colie <3 : Did he build your current coop? It looks just like a couple of retail coops I was looking at recently! I found a picture of the coop with some general specs online and he built it from those pictures.

    Coop Space Dilemma-pics

Thanks everyone for the input! I think I will eventually bite the bullet and build a larger coop (by "I" i mean my husband . . . I was thinking the covered run WOULD make a great green house actually, not a bad idea for Spring! Now the search for the new coop design begins . . .

    Coop Space Dilemma-pics

Quote: Thanks Ridgerunner, very helpful to look at it from this perspective. I do keep the pop door from the coop to the run open at all times, as it is rather predator proof, it butts up directly to the coop and all areas under the suntuf roof panels (including the space under the coop) are...

    Coop Space Dilemma-pics

Like so many chicken newbie's; my first year has brought many learning experiences. Originally I thought I wanted 3-4 hens, had my wonderful husband build me a coop that said it was for 6-8 chickens (just in case), I now have five hens, and soon would like two more (my max I swear ). The...

Ideas for where to get petition signatures.

I agree that facebook is a wonderful place to place a link to sign the petition, also if you have a food co-op near by I am sure they would allow you to have something . . . our local food co-op is showing a video of "Mad-City Chickens" a small documentary on the Madison, WI backyard chickens...

If you "google" topics on Urban/Backyard chickens and city ordinances you will find a wealth of information, and I agree with HorseFeatherz that this website has endless information. Below I'll include a blog from a very knowledgeable individual that I feel provides solid responses to the most...

    Chicken with Mareks, Now what?

Thank you for the information. I will clean the coop again for good measure, and hope my other chickens are resistant, I will certainly get vaccinated chicks in the future. I think she is too far gone to save. The first ten days or so, I thought she was maybe going to pull through, she was...

    Chicken with Mareks, Now what?

Long story short, I have had my cuckoo maran (from a small backyard flock of six) in my basement monitoring her and trying to nurse her back to health for the last two weeks, she is showing signs of left leg and wing paralysis along with greenish and white runny poop, her weight is dropping...

First sick Chicken! Please help me figure this out (pictures)

Update on my chicken . . . I put have had her on probiotics for the last seven days, and very little improvement on her symptoms (maybe her poo is a little darker or more green and less creamy, but otherwise no change), and since yesterday she is declining rapidly, sleeps mostly, lays down and...

First sick Chicken! Please help me figure this out (pictures)
