    Choking Hen! Help!

That’s a great idea! She always eats like a maniac so I’ll try adding something to slow her down. I kept her inside overnight just to keep an eye on her but she seems alright now, which is great.

    Choking Hen! Help!

Hi all, I just had a massive scare. My 1.5 year old Barred Plymouth Rock hen, Tilly, just started choking. I was bringing them in from their pen and I left her in the coop to go bring in two of her sisters. I come back and she has her beak wide open, trying to gasp. I pick her up and stick my...

    Lead Poisoning in Hen

Thanks so much for your kind words! I think that she'll pull through. She's not out of the woods yet, but her color is a lot better, she's put on some weight, and she already seems to be perking up a bit!

How Humane Are No-Crow Rooster Collars?

Thanks for your reply! I think that I’m gonna try the blackout curtains first and then try out the collar. He doesn’t seem too bothered by it right now. I appreciate you saying that I wasn’t like a horrible person or anything for wanting to use one. I really love this rooster and I thought I was...

    Lead Poisoning in Hen

Thanks so much! I had no idea there was an oral chelator. Yes my hen is quite big so an oral applicator would probably be easier. My hen has been really low energy recently too so I’ll try giving her some hard boiled egg like you said to see if that’ll help her feel a bit better. I’m thinking...

How Humane Are No-Crow Rooster Collars?

Thank you so much for replying! I found your diagram to be super helpful. Who knew that they got two breaths for the price of one? Pretty cool! Unfortunately, I live in an area that doesn’t have a particular love of roosters. (I’ll never understand why. I think that roosters get a bad rap.) I...

    Lead Poisoning in Hen

We’re getting our soil tested shortly, but we are almost positive that the source is from the soil. We’ve been using our tap water for the chickens (which has new pipes) just to be sure though. The vet said that the poisoning was most likely chronic. She said that our other hens had probably...

How Humane Are No-Crow Rooster Collars?

Thanks so much for all the replies. I realize that roosters crow and I knew that going into it. However, in this case getting the rooster was quite unexpected. He was at a kill shelter and I managed to nab him before he was sent to become soup. I figured that a collar was better than being...

    Does Mating Hurt The Hen?

Thanks for replying! And yeah I just weighed him. Turns out he’s 8 pounds. Still pretty big for his age but not quite 10 haha. I think I thought he was bigger because of the size difference between him and the hens. Thanks again!

    Does Mating Hurt The Hen?

Hi all! So I recently got a 5 month old Rhode Island Red mix rooster named Harvey from a rescue. He’s a very sweet rooster. He’s nice with people and the hens and is not aggressive. I introduced him to the hens yesterday and they largely ignored him but he tried his best to win them over. Today...

How Humane Are No-Crow Rooster Collars?

Hi all! So I recently got a 5 month old Rhode Island Red mix rooster named Harvey from a local rescue. He’s an absolute sweetheart, very nice and not aggressive. But he crows, without fail, at the crack of dawn every morning. He’s fairly quiet the rest of the day though. We’ve been looking in...

    Lead Poisoning in Hen

Hi all! So I have a 3-year-old Buff Brahma hen named Paisley. She’s an absolute sweetheart, more like a dog than a chicken to be honest. She’s one of my favorite girls. Recently I noticed that she seemed a bit lethargic. She was eating and drinking normally but just didn’t seem like herself. She...

    Chicken Show Help!

Oh that's so cool! I always go on that website and then end up with at least 5 breeds in my basket that I'm interested in :) Are the My Pet Chicken breeds pretty close to breed standard?

    Chicken Show Help!

Thanks so much for your help! This may sound like a stupid question, but does that mean that they aren't recognized as breeds? Sorry it's probably super obvious but I just figured I would make sure. Also, do the birds need any vaccines or papers or anything before a show?

    Hen keeps getting bullied! Help!

I tried doing that and then reintroducing her but the problem persisted. Maybe just keeping her in a separate pen is a good idea. At least she wouldn't be totally alone that way. What do you think about getting a sixth chicken just for her and then introducing the two of them to the others?

    Hen keeps getting bullied! Help!

It's been going on since at least May. I just feel so bad leaving her all alone like that, especially since she's so social. Do you think getting her a friend would work? I was thinking that maybe introducing two instead of one might keep her from being singled out but I'm not sure if it would work.
