Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Yes. I use a decomposed granite and sand mix. The quarries will deliver it or if you have a truck they will put it in bed of truck then you can shovel it off.

Go to a place that sells gravel etc. Ask for the DG mix.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

I get DG Mix which is decomposed granite and sand. It has tiny pebble particles so I don't need to get grit. It actually is better than just sand. Do not use playground sand or mason sand is right.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Sure you can do that. Not an issue. The sand may have little pebbles which the hens will eat like grit so they can digest their food.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Yes me too. My run is fully covered and tapped on sides. I put shavings on top of sand in run in winter. I love the sand so easy to keep clean and the poop dries up immediately.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

What do you scoop it up with? I replaced my sand 1 year later. Actually just added a little more. If you use something like a kitty litter scoop only bigger the sand will sift through and only the poop will stay and you can throw it in the garden

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Great choice. It works great and easy to clean. I would suggest shavings in the nest boxes. You can make a big chicken poop cleaner with a plastic pitch fork and chicken wire small enough for sand to sift through but not the poop then you scoop it up like kitty litter. It works like a charm

    Chicken " Throwing Up"

I went into the coop and one of my hens was sitting on the roost so I went over to pet her and she threw up a clear very faint yellow tinge to it. She has never done this before. Her eyes, wattle and comb are normal red. What should I do besides keeping an eye on her

    hen with peck wound

Hi. I have a hen who has been bullied her entire life when I adopted her. Obviously another hen pecked her butt and I found her with a bloody rear. I caught her and brought her in to assess her injury. I did find a peck hole. I cleaned her up and sprayed Vetricyn on it and put her in the...

    BOSS vs Corn

I tried crumbles at first and had to purchase oyster shell too. I now get the mini layer pellets complete because it includes oyster shell in it. They love it and i don't have to buy the oyster shell separately. Here in Nevada it's 16.99 for 50lbs.

    Switching Feed.

Sorry forgot to say that you should feed the cracked corn as a supplement to their crumble or pellets.

    Switching Feed.

No do not mix together with their feed. Gradually feed the cracked corn a little at a time and I'd do it only in evening 30 minutes before they go to roost.

Winter is Coming! Checklists, tips, advice for a newbie

I live in Northern Nevada where it gets cold and snows but not below zero. I have infrared heat lamps plugged into a thermal cube which turns them on when it gets below 30 degrees and turns off at 40. My hens are cold hardy so there are times i don't turn on the lamps to see just how much they...

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Hi. Oh yes i swear by the dg mix it's decomposed granite mixed with sand. So easy to clean. I took the plastic pitch for and wrapped chicken wire around it so it picks up the poop and the sand mix sifts through. Works like a charm. It keeps them cool in the summer and works with the other...
