Lost a hen this week to a ?

Our birds free range on our three acres and are in a locked barn at night with the only access through an electric fence. I have no intention of locking them up during the day, however the other day I heard some strange squawking and didn't think much of it, then I noticed one of our hens was...

Do I HAVE to feed layer mash?

What do you do in the winter when there's no access to pasture? I do feed my goats...lol. They get hay once a day in the morning because we're still getting our pasture rotation down to a fine art. We had big plans for our fence but our finances disagreed. Besides the hay they're out on the...

Do I HAVE to feed layer mash?

After reading all about feeding grain to my goats and sheep and deciding that we weren't going to, I began to wonder...do I HAVE to feed a layer mash to my chickens? We have nine birds and they blast through a $25.00 bag of organic mash in just over a week which I think is excessive so I just...

Re-post; New birds not laying, disturbing quote from previous owner.

Wow, ok. Well that's fine, I'm glad they're here rolling around in the dirt and discovering bugs. They seem happy. I just thought we had been duped into buying much older birds that weren't laying anymore. If they'll lay eventually that's all that matters. Thanks!

Re-post; New birds not laying, disturbing quote from previous owner.

Ok, but how long should I expect them to take to adjust? And they're beaks have definitely been trimmed...that makes me sad! Do they grow back? How does this affect them long term? I don't really think that there's any way I can contain them, do you think if I don't contain them and just...

Re-post; New birds not laying, disturbing quote from previous owner.

I posted about this last week I think but I can't find the original thread for the life of me so... We added five new 17 month old Rhode Island's to our flock almost two weeks ago. Two of them laid eggs under a random chair in the barn the first day they were here and since then...NOTHING...

Bought five new birds; None seem to be laying

Ok that's good to know! I won't worry too much about it then. I was in such a hurry for them to experience the great outdoors that I shooed them all outside two days after they got here, which was last Saturday. I guess I'll just wait and see!! Thanks!

Bought five new birds; None seem to be laying

Ok, so first I'll get all my mistakes out in the wind... We bought five "adult" Rhode Island Reds from a random lady on kijiji. She said they were all one year old and laying daily. They were in not so great shape when we picked them up because she had them all so crammed in together in...

    Eye Worm? *Picture

Should I post somewhere else, like in another section? Maybe since it's not an emergency is why I've gotten no assistance thus far?

    Eye Worm? *Picture

So one of my girls has had this going on with her eye for the past month or so. From what I've looked up, maybe it's eye worm? If it's not eye worm, what else could it be? I really need some advice on what to do to get rid of it if it is eye worm because I do not have to stomach to press it...

Alpine does; too much milk for one family?

Well yes, once I know how to make those things, thàts the plan. We're getting kids so we can get in a bunch of experience before we get into breeding and milking next year. We go through about 2 gallons per week here. Lol, I had to convert that from our Canadian style up here. ;). If the...

Alpine does; too much milk for one family?

So what we really wanted to do was get two Nubian or Nigerian doe kids as our first goats this year. We can't find ANY Nubians ANYWHERE and the Nigerians we've located are a two hour trek to get them. There's a pair of Alpine does nearby but is their milk supply going to be too much for our...

    Fair price for goats?

We're trying to find purebred Nubians and/or a dairy mix but I can't believe the trouble I'm having! Everyone wants to keep their doelings and since we only want two goats until we get the hang of it we don't want a buck. There's a bunch of those available. I didn't think I would have this...

    Fair price for goats?

We're looking to purchase two dairy goats in the next month or so for our small family farm. We went to a local breeder who has two does we are interested in. I was kind of surprised by how much she wanted for them but since I don't know what goats cost I can't be sure the prices are fair...

First timer; duckling questions because all I know is they're cute.

Well we were considering turning an old bathtub (it's about 60" x 36" and quite deep) to provide them with somewhere to swim, although if that's completely uneccessary then I would rather spare myself the work. We'd like to convert into a pond...one I won't have to clean or refill, so a pump...

First timer; duckling questions because all I know is they're cute.

Ok, so the plan was to have the ducks free range on all of our 3 acres that currently has no fencing. We will be getting fencing in the spring but it will be to keep larger animals (goats, sheep, horses etc.) contained, not really to contain ducks and/or keep out predators. Our chickens are in...

First timer; duckling questions because all I know is they're cute.

After three years of raising chickens in my suburban backyard we finally moved to the country where much to my husbands dismay, I can bring all sorts of animals home. That being said I am bent on getting some ducks this spring. As pets, pest control for the garden and my sheer obsession with...
