My 3 hens leave behind a portion of their feed....

Hey! Just wondering if anyone would have any idea why my girls (3) are leaving behind the pellet portion of their food. They are 26 or so weeks and are laying regularly (1-3 per day). They get to free range from 1 hour to 4 or 5 hours in a day. I figure its just not their favorite part… Seems...

The saga of Helen the rooster continues

After finding out that one of our darling hens was in fact a rooster, we waited to see if we could keep him. He has a flock of three and all seemed to be going well until the last few weeks (he is now 18 weeks old). My 5 and 8 year old are starting to get fearful of him as he randomly turns and...

    Perhaps Helen is Troy?

So the saga continues. After the disaster of kids leaving coop open, we have gotten quite attached to the one survivor. "She" got quite attached to the baby chicks we brought home the same day after the original 3 were killed. "She" is now 12 weeks and the 3 new chicks 6 weeks. This week to...

    Listening to daddy

We all had a tragically learned lesson today. The kids have been told over and over not to go into the coop without us. Guess they snuck in, dogs in back and before we knew it 3 chickens dead and all traumatized. Kids in the coop while dog killed at least two, other dog got one trying to get...

Anyone have experience with the ten gallon water "cooler"?

The girls seem to be getting used to many changes. They seem to have taken to the bottle nipples quite well. For now have a small water bottle in coop with the ten gallon double nipple "cooler" in the enclosed run. Wondering if anyone has a formula for changing it? 10 gallons may have been a...

    Moving them into the coop

We are moving our 16 day olds into the enclosed coop today. They just seem to want more space. Hope all goes well! Blocked off nesting boxes and will hang their heat lamp. Any other suggestions? Also when can I let them go in and out into the run? It is all enclosed so no access from predators
