Comment by 'DebiWebi' in article 'Fermenting Chicken Feed: A Straightforward Method'

A few years ago there were some contaminated sprouts sold in grocery stores, same story as with romaine, the producer wasn't careful. My store still won't carry them for that reason, however they do sell romaine, so go figure. I sprout my own (mung beans) in a sprouting cup if I can't find them...

Review by 'DebiWebi' in article 'Fermenting Chicken Feed: A Straightforward Method'

Great information, thank you! I live in the suburbs and only have access to pellets and crumbles, but a few years ago I came across a recipe for making my own grain feed. I haven't make it for quite a while, but will do so now and try the ferment. I'm a big fan of fermentation and sprouting...

    Ended 2020 Chicken Gift-Ideas From Amazon & TSC - $25 Giveaway!

Oh my, too many items bought on Amazon for my chickens. But this is a clear winner. Bought it for my first flock because we had a mouse/rat problem, but didn't use it until the new flock. Taught them how to use it when they were chicks, and I love this feeder. Mouse and rat proof, and the girls...

    Hen sounds phlegmy

Yes, thanks, she's been on layer feed ever since she was off chick feed. I give them oyster shells (they don't seem too fond of them); dry out, crush & throw egg shells in the run; and recently bought calcium tablets to crush and add to their "bedtime snack." I think they ARE getting down...

    Hen sounds phlegmy

Well I checked her crop in the morning and it was empty. I decided to let the girls out early so I could check her out. She seemed perfectly fine, no cough or other issues. Then another of the hens coughed a couple of times. Yikes! But then that was it, everything is back to normal. So I guess...

    Hen sounds phlegmy

I have a 1-1/2 year old Red Sex Link Hen, named Ginger, that made a couple of wet coughing sounds this afternoon, and I just noticed her breathing sounds a little phlegmy. She's been acting normal all day, free ranging in the yard, taking dirt baths, eating grass, digging. She's also molting...

    Bullying of one hen

She's healthy, she is molting (first molt), which I mentioned earlier. My "tiny" coop is larger than the one I used to have, I've had chickens in this setup for 10 years and not had this problem before. Also, the chickens only lay eggs in the coop, they roost in the run. I'll look for more...

    Bullying of one hen

OK thanks. Dixie just jumped Jersey again in the back yard, tearing at her comb 3-4 times before I could get to her. She bled a little, I have blue-kote. I caught Dixie, held her upside down for a little while (something someone else told me to do), then put her in the cage of shame. Maybe she...

    Bullying of one hen

I forgot to mention, Dixie crowed a few times yesterday morning. I used to have a hen that crowed (poorly), so I wasn't totally taken aback, but I was surprised how perfectly rooster it sounded. Then she went into the coop and laid an egg.

    Bullying of one hen

Dixie (the most aggressive) is an Ameraucana. Then comes Einstein, I think she's a Partridge Rock, and Ginger—totally out of character for her. I don't know what she is, Buff Rock? Photo attached, she's lounging on the patio furniture right now. The only one that hasn't jumped on the bandwagon...

    Bullying of one hen

OK thanks. I have a wire transport cage set up on the back porch. I started out with time outs for the aggressive chicken, but now that I have 3 out of the 5 attacking I'll have to rethink that. This morning we left everyone out to free range but her when she trapped Jersey in the tractor. Setup...

BTW what do you mean by "in the see but don't touch time out" ?

    Bullying of one hen

Thanks I'll see what I can do as far as the extra food & water. We do have a second set of feeders on our back porch, but I'll have to figure out how to get an extra feeder/waterer into the run. Plus the obstacles. The run is 8'x8', not a lot of room. If there was a second entry into the tractor...

    Bullying of one hen

Hi there, I have 5 hens of various breeds. They were all bought as day-olds on May 1, 2019 and have gotten along well except for the past two weeks. One of my smaller hens Dixie suddenly started attacking my Jersey Giant. Even while free ranging in the yard, she would chase Jersey down and grab...
