I would use the hardware cloth, chicken wire only keeps chickens in.

yea, i don't keep food and water in my coop. they don't eat or drink at night anyhow. just be sure to be up and open the door for them at...
toss them in about 30 minutes before dark and let them out in the morning and repeat until they figure it out on their own. that's what i did

linoleum underneath hay is what i would use for something like that personally
i should add that my run is under roof and doesn't get wet. also, i should mention i use river sand...it doesn't "hardpan" like some of the other...
