    Letting new pullets out

Probably. You may have to help them but they'll get the idea provided the coop is suitable. If you don't have a run is your garden fenced? Are you planning on ranging them from dawn till dusk and hoping they'll go to roost unsupervised?.

Two hours. It didn't rain while I was there. It felt cold at 9C when I left. Feathers are coming off. Not exactly a fast, or a thorough moult the way Sylph is going. On my plot. I let it do what it wants more or less over the winter. The chickens like the cover from the fruit bushes and what...

Can't really do Halloween without this.

30 week chicken lost tail feathers to a dog

The feathers will grow back, with or without a moult.:) This young chap for example had his ripped out by a weasel along with a chunk of his flesh. He needed stitches. All his tail feathers grew back in time. He even grew some lovely sickle feathers.

    Wound on girl’s neck

The wound needs to be cleaned properly and disinfected. Buy some Chlorhexidine. Soak the wound in it. Leave it to soak in. Don't wipe it away. The puss indicates an infection. You may need to consider a course of antibiotics, particularly if that scab was sealing the puss underneath it.

Two hours this afternoon. It felt cold. It was windy and it rained a bit. The picture tells the story. I'm sitting inside the coop extension with Glais, Mow and Sylph. We did get out despite the weather. Checking for the remains of the half can of tuna I took them. Things have changed. I...

Damn! I misread that. For a moment I thought it said it's interesting how politicians swing. A bit sharp in the current climate of affluence.:p:lol: Course, failing the above there's always that French import that does the trick...

Two hours today. Windy, damp, but above 10C. Thinking about Lima this afternoon. When she was sick. Recovering. An extraordinary hen. Something has changed. I'm not sure what. The change is to do with them, not me. It seems Glais has learned something but again, I'm not sure what. The only...

I agree. Guy Fawks Day has undergone the same fate. It seems to have spread over a couple of weeks. Worse still, it's being called bonfire night a lot. Ruins the history of the day in my opinion. I won't start on Christmas.:rant

The book Perris has referenced can be read online here. I haven't tried the download option. The book is interesting but it's expensive. https://www.scribd.com/document/919006269/Moult-and-Ageing-of-European-Passerines-2nd-Edition-Lukas-Jenni-digital-download

    Almost laying behaviors?

I think this is quite normal with pullets. Most come to use the egg boxes when they're older and better established in the group.

Two hours, dry, around 11C but with some 35mph wind gusts. We had one spell of strong gusts that made the chickens take cover in the coop extension. I can't help feeling sorry for Sylph. She's not laying eggs so, like many cockerels and young roosters I've found, Glais won't feed her or think...

Are they wine grapes? The chickens in Catalonia loved the wine grapes. the vines were the first port of call after unlock in the morning. We had fig trees as well, four that produced fruit. Three of the figs trees produced the usual dark purple fig but the other produced green figs and they were...

Two hours, grey, damp and chilly. Mow hadn't quite settled down when I took this. When I last looked she was next to Sylph. From the past. Dinner at my house. Tribe 1 with Tribe 2 just moving in at the low right with the Muscovies overlooking; the dog of course. Sitting at my desk.

    MJ's little flock

It is very difficult to scale due to the accelerated growth and learning curve in the first year. One past that I think it's around 7 chicken years t 1 of ours. I haven't read any recent statistics on the subject, but not that long a go 10 years old was a good age for dual purpose breeds...
