You know it’s hot when 5 day old chicks are choosing outdoor shade to sleep rather than the brooder with heat lamps.
Garden is doing pretty well, slogging thru the weeds though - it’s been a banner year for weeds.
We actually got cucumbers!!!! Enough to make pickles!!! I used predatory...
Far behind again! I try to keep up with you all, but other things take up time too.
Yesterday we had an intense storm for about 30 min. Even the tiny carrot plants were flattened to the ground, pepper plants were tipped over -not broken though.
Sweet potato slips arrived … right as this...
About 40 (!) pages behind.
Looks like the rain and cool weather has caused some fungal issues on fruit trees. But, luckily heat is coming our way (along with some humidity).
Yesterday we got A LOT of rain around early afternoon. We have a waterway along the side of the yard, so it can...
I’m behind on this thread!
This week I’ve planted all melon starts and seeds under “solar film” for warmth and weed barrier.
All squash planted, but I had to re-seed several this week bc several hadn’t sprouted, even after 10 days!
Tomato’s were already planted out, so today I smoothed...
Auxiliary garden underway. 80+ year old neighbors won’t do much from here on out with respect to their garden plot, so my husband nicely asked if we could plant corn there. They said yes! So on Sunday we planted 25’ rows of 3 sweet corn varieties. 2 rows Silver Queen, 3 rows Bodacious, 3...
Agree. I don’t care much for Stevia - always have a bit (or a lot) of an aftertaste. I used to buy some protein snack bars but then they had an aftertaste starting about 2 years ago…yup added Stevia, but also has sucralose (which is considered not to be “natural” )
My husband can’t tolerate...
4 pear trees planted. All bare root. Two had a good amount of roots. Another had less, but ok amount of roots. Last one.. hardly any roots, so we shall see how it fares. Only some leaf buds on one tree, the other three look like just emerging from dormancy, with some green tips. We...
Neighbor won’t plant his garden this year bc older (83?) , a little too hard. So my husband asked if he could till his garden bed and plant corn. Neighbor said yes! So I bought these to plant. Hope they are decent varieties.
We will also plant some cowpeas too - they gave me the last of...
The persimmon tree arrived today from Stark. It looks to be a good size and looks healthy. I hope it gets established and lives as this one replaces the same variety that died.
Hoping to see the other trees arrive soon.
Me too!!
Yes. Root was pretty huge. Got it out (they are in a raised bed) and had to use an ax with a hammer to pound on the back of the ax to get through the root. Totally survived the ordeal (myself and the rhubarb).
Called Stark. Order should be shipped this week. 🙄🙄🙄.
Called Gurneys bc the two types of potatoes we bought have very poor germination. We’ve grown both before (other suppliers), and have grown potatoes for years, so we have experience.
Potato bed has 3 sections. Front section is 8’x4’...
Stark Brothers - they have issues.
Ordered 5 trees with expected arrival weeks ago. Nothing. Nothing at all has arrived.
Since my order I’ve received two (2) email telling me that my delivery pushed out until another date. But I’ve received over sixty (60)… yes, sixty emails telling me...
I’m west central Ohio. One fruit tree drowned bc of all the rain not allowing ground to dry and standing water around it roots for too long. Another fruit tree is showing signs of too much water too, but in another area- it should survive though. Rain all this past weekend and for the next 2...
I am not aware that they are Amish. They are located within the I-275 loop around Cincinnati and are not rural- they are located in Mt. Healthy, Ohio. But, I’ve never purchased from them. My local feed store, where we buy our feed, gets their chicks from Mt Healthy.
It’s a small hatchery in business for about 100 years. Their website is about as low tech as you can get, without even pictures. And, in fact, 1-2 years ago they changed their web address, but it’s really hard to find their site now, even for someone like me that has been on the new site...
Yes, across a few breeds. Having 1-2 pass out of 30 isn’t surprising…and injuries happen (also leading to loss) …but we’ve had to dispatch more than typical.
We’ve never had an obvious genetic issue from there either, so the crossbeak was unexpected. And, we’ve bought a particular...
Planted 7 varieties of carrots, planted a patch of spinach, and some small quick growing salad turnips.
Fly predators started to hatch! Sprinkled them around the compost, goat pen, and around the outside of the chicken pen.
I added predatory nematodes to the soil right before heavy rain a...
Yes!
Hot, sun, water! They WANT to live. You can hardly overwater them in the first month as they are getting established. Do not plant them too early..under 50F at night makes for a sad sweet potato. They will wilt in the fall when touched by light frost. We pre-warm the soil with...
