    7 month old EE

I was so confident she was, but the friend saying I had a rooster, then someone on a Facebook chicken group saying rooster kind of had me thinking. But I knew at 7 months, I would have seen some mating if she was a rooster.

    7 month old EE

I have a 7 month old Easter Egger. I’m 99.9% sure she is a pullet. Her hatch mates began laying at 5 months, but this one hasn’t laid an egg yet. I realize with the shorter days, she may not lay until spring. I had a picture of her on Facebook and someone said she looked like a rooster? I...

    All flock of layer feed?

I have had couple soft shell eggs, but they were both within the first week of a new layer laying eggs. Haven’t had one in months. Apparently it isn’t uncommon for a new layer to have some unusual eggs. They were on starter/grower feed, it I did have oyster shell available as well.

    All flock of layer feed?

That’s kind of what I was thinking. Just wait until all the girls are laying then switch. Of course by then, I may have more babies...

    All flock of layer feed?

I have a set of 29 week olds and a set of 19 week olds. Last month, I switched from starter/grower to all flock. It’s time to buy more feed. Do I stick with all flock? Or are the babies (and 1 older EE freeloader) still too young for layer feed? I do keep a separate bowl of oyster shell in the...

    Soft shelled egg

Yes. Thanks for the advise. I think I’m just a nervous first timer here. When things don’t go according to my plan, I get a little worried.

    Soft shelled egg

And she has been going into the box every morning. Yesterday she left with no egg. She is in there now, but I would be surprised if there is an egg when I get home.

    Soft shelled egg

No egg Monday, but she must have laid one while on the roost last night. When I let them out this morning, there was a busted egg on the floor of the coop. It was a hard shelled egg, but pretty thin. Now my question is...how can I help her get back on her morning egg laying schedule? Apparently...

    Soft shelled egg

ISA browns are known for being egg laying machines. She has had 1 double yolker so far. I will keep an eye on her. It was just so weird for her to lay an egg so late in the evening and while she was roosting for the night.

    Soft shelled egg

I have not noticed her eating the oyster shell. My chickens free range and are out of the coop/run most of the day, only coming in occasionally to eat/drink.

    Soft shelled egg

My almost 20 week old ISA Brown who has been laying for 2 1/2 weeks just laid a soft shelled egg. She has been laying about 6 eggs per week. She consistently lays around 7-730 am. This morning she was in the box, but no egg. I didn’t think anything if it with her being a new layer and she has...

New layer walking with wings slightly out

I thought it was strange I never seen any do it until I had a layer. And now another was doing it who I suspicioned could be my next layer.

    Great advise. Thank you.

New layer walking with wings slightly out

That may be it. I had just never seen any do that until this one started to lay. Now I have another doing it as well.

New layer walking with wings slightly out

My new layer (1 week now) has been walking around with her wings slightly out. Like when she squats and spreads her wings. It’s warm, but certainly not hot (Highs in the 80s) They aren’t panting. My other big girls haven’t started to lay yet, they are all 19 weeks, but I have some who may be...

    Salmon Faverolle

I would definitely recommend. Mine are still young, but they are so pretty and so sweet!

    Salmon Faverolle

My coop is built for up to 15, so if she goes broody, I could possibly slip in 1 or 2 babies. I have 40 acres they free range, really stay on about 5-7 of those acres, so are basically only in the coop at night, and come to the run to get a drink or bite to eat.
