Just call me paranoid or impatient

Sorry hear you lost the baby. It really is a toss up and some say if the chick is not strong enough to hatch out on its own it is not going to survive. It is always so hard to lose them. Im sure you did the best you could for it.

Just call me paranoid or impatient

I have about a 50/50 success rate with a safety chip. I candle and see where the beak is if the shell has not broken away indicating beak location. I make a little break at the beak point and pull the shell and membrane off so the chick gets plenty of air. Normally I let the chick take it...

I'm looking for Silkies to hatch

Id love to be able to come pick them up but I dont think that is possible. Eggs/chicks, just dont want to put them through the torture of mailing.

I'm looking for Silkies to hatch

Unfortunately I know this to be true. I have a friend who worked at the USPS mail distribution center in Oakland, CA and he told me exactly why all the eggs had broken air cells, what the packages go through on their trip through the system. "Water-fall" like drops and of course the carriers...

I'm looking for Silkies to hatch

Be careful on mailing eggs for hatching. Eggs wont break with great packing efforts but nothing protects the air cell from rupturing. Id love to purchase some silkily hatching eggs too but Im looking for some near SF California. Not going to buy mailed eggs again. When I did all air cells...

    Red jungle fowl

Its probably too late to matter as Im sure you know the sex of your chicks. I found this on the Internet: DORSAL STRIPES AND EYELINES Chicks with dorsal stripes can be sexed, often with nearly 100% accuracy. The downy coat is similar to that of red junglefowl chicks, so the pattern is...

    Sultan cockerel look question

OH that is just what my guy looks like. Those false feather wings never went away like others suggested. Instead they became more visible.

my first time brooder wont leave the nest of eggs for going on four days now

Took her off the nest and placed her out on the deck. She stood up for a bit and tried to clean up the broken egg yolk off her feathers. She did not eat or poo out side but I did clean out her nest and found two large, dry poo turds. None of the eggs seem to be developing yet but she hasnt...

my first time brooder wont leave the nest of eggs for going on four days now

OK, Ill try again to take her off and let her squat off the nest for a bit. I am a bit worried about her simply because she had the crook neck issue and has acted a little dense. For instance it took a long time for her to find her way back into the house at night from being on the porch all...

my first time brooder wont leave the nest of eggs for going on four days now

OK, so I tried taking her off the nest and checked for poo. No poo and where I set her she sat. She didnt want to get up and stretch or go for food or drink or poo. I will offer her water today.

my first time brooder wont leave the nest of eggs for going on four days now

She was young when I got her, probably 1 or 2 weeks. She developed crook neck syndrome and I helped her through it. She has been with me as a house and deck chicken and chose to lay her eggs between my dresser and the wall to the outside deck area. There is no sign of poo around the area so I...

my first time brooder wont leave the nest of eggs for going on four days now

Should I make her get off or just leave her alone to figure it out? I have been giving her food which she eats but Im worried she is pooing on the eggs and in the nest. She is tucked back between two vertical walls so I dont get much view of anything more than her head. I dont smell any poo...

What poultry product do you wish you had?

I dont take my chickens to vets because doing so is a waste of money as the vets dont know what is wrong nor do they have the necessary skills to treat if they did know. That is why science needs to catch up with the times. There are more animals out there than just dogs and cats that need...

What poultry product do you wish you had?

Medicines that really work. I have wasted so much money and suffered such heartache treating sick chickens. Nothing helps them. Why cant science focus a little time on avian health care instead of considering fowl dispensable creatures. We who have them as pets dont consider them dispensable.

    Another year full of cockerels....

I had a golden hen who hatched mostly females. I do think it has something to do with the stress levels of the hens. I think where there are plenty of roos trying to mate with a hen she is stressed and tends to produce more female offspring. What is the source of your eggs? If from your own...

Contest #3 Cutest Baby Fowl! - 10th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong

First night on the roost. Amazingly Mama Minnie only needed help with two of the babies. The rest all made it up under her on their own. Roost is about 7 feet high.

    Chicks neck turned weird?

Here is a tip. After giving Babsey a bath a day due to a head full of food I stopped the wet food for a bit. Id give her only dry crumbles and a little bit of whole kernel corn which was not too messy. This help me out a lot and she didnt mind the dry food diet at all. The corn was a treat...
