If my husband would move, I would gladly go too. But I’m not going without him & he wants to stay. lol.
Summer here is absolutely beautiful though. Spring and fall are pretty amazing too. Just the 3.5 months between them that sucks, and it’s usually only like that every 10 years or so...
Upstate NY weather is no joke either. Adirondack mountains are super cold with lots of skiing available. We will probably be mostly 10-40 degrees (lowest night to highest daytime) temps until March. Got 15 inches of snow this weekend. The chickens hate it. I spend my time shoveling to make sure...
Do you want baby pullets or older pullets? May want to ask in our NYer thread too, there’s a bunch of us there that might have some local info for you!
Thank you. I may try sifting this spring, and will definitely turn w a pitchfork. I think that might be the biggest problem, the chickens scratch but not ambitiously enough 😂
@gtaus How big is your chicken run that you compost in?
I use pine shavings in my coop, and I scoop poop each morning into a bucket. When the bucket gets full (usually 2-3 days), I dump the bucket on one of my over-winter raised garden beds, or in the large (20x50) chicken run (if the veggie...
My hatchery ordered “Olive egger” lays chocolate brown eggs. She looks like a black copper Marans but w muffs and a beard. But the 3 eggs I hatched with the ordered chicks (2 from brown eggs, one from a blue egg, same rooster), all lay green eggs. 😂. Following to see what people know .
Had some chicken math happen myself. We lost 6 of our 8 new littles from the summer to a predator right before integrating them…tough lesson learned. I was going to wait until spring to add more chicks, but somehow every breed we lost was available at the same time for the week of Sept 22. I...
What kind of work do you do, Moony? My DH is in safety & security. He has a decent schedule w some autonomy. I workin a school. Good so im home when the kids are home. Lucky to have a good boss who knows i do what im supposed to and leaves me alone.
I dislike the winter months for this reason…I see them for 10 minutes in the morning, and maybe 20 when I get home from work before dark.
I try to spend extra time on the days I am off to drink my coffee in the run or just sit out there when I drop off veggie scraps if the temperature...
I moved my 5 week olds outside a few weeks ago, and my 4yo lead hen, a Welsummer who has never been broody, has “adopted” them. It is adorable. She clucks to them when she finds food and I think because she is the head hen, the other hens accepted this group quickly. Easiest integration I’ve...
I am getting about 25-30 eggs a week from my 21 layers. Can’t wait for the new 9 to start. But won’t probably be until after the new year. The six hens that are a year are keeping us afloat, along with one of my 2yo Olive Eggers. Everyone else seems to be on molt break or winter break.
I should! Have to get out in good lighting…the weather has been high winds and rain! (Poor chickens…they still venture out of their protected run and come back drenched)!
I have a range of hens ages 8 weeks to 4 years. This year, the molt is BAD. I have about 7 hens who seemed to have lost half their feathers overnight. I have had 1 or 2 look like this in the past, but never this many at the same time.
A few look to have molted and grown back feathers already...
