Agree with previous, they both look like females to me. Wyandotte tend to pink up pretty early.
The color differences are just how blue is. It's a highly variable color and can range from very pale grey to so dark it looks black.
I think the two on the left are boys. They both have more developed comb and wattles and the red on the wings is usually male specific coloration. The two on the right look like pullets with small pale combs and very little wattle development.
If no one's crowing yet, I would wait a little...
Who ordered snow?!
No one has set foot outside of the coop since we got snow last Saturday.
Rose is not impressed
I suspect the cold caused the water heater to stay on all night and the draw was enough to drain the batteries.
Lady Amalthea, Paprika, and Apollo look very cozy cuddled up next to each other tonight!
Caught another mouse last night. The electric trap is very effective. Unfortunately, I have tiny cannibals living in my garage. I'm finding about every other mouse we catch partially eaten :sick One the...
Fully feathered chickens usually handle single digit temps no problem as long as they have somewhere dry to get out of the wind. They're wearing down coats after all!
In all seriousness, feathers make for excellent insulation against the cold. The down traps warm air against the body and as...
Looks like mild frostbite to me. Generally the recommendation is to leave it alone. It's a small enough area that trying to treat it topically is likely to cause her more pain than the frostbite itself. Eventually that tip will self amputate, but it won't affect her health. I had to pullets last...
Great news! Lady Amalthea's bumblefoot is almost completely healed! Her right foot is completely healed, looks like nothing was ever wrong with it. And her left foot is nearly there too. When I changed the bandage tonight the scab seemed to be lifting so I went ahead and pulled it off...
Husband wanted to show me some minor comb damage he noticed on one of the malines cockerels. This is the picture he sent me:
:gigHe said he tried to get a picture in the coop, but the cockerel wouldn't hold still because he was looking at him. So he tried to catch him up and he flew out the...
My first winter with chickens was my first winter with a polar vortex. I don't remember what the temps for that day were, but I decided it would be too cold for chickens and I wouldn't let them out that day. When I went out to bring them warm water, the entire flock met me at the gate to the...
Mix away! Do a little research and pick breeds with similar temperaments and you should be ok. If you have any questions, the BYC community is a font of knowledge and can give you their personal experiences.
I've always had mixed flocks and never really had a problem. Right now my in town...
I would agree, the ones you clocked as cockerels are definitely 100% boys. Never have I ever seen a chick with that much wattle development at 9 weeks turn out to be a pullet. You can cull them without worrying they're secret pullets. And the three you think are pullets all look like girls to me...
Most barred roosters (of a given breed) are "double barred" meaning they have two copies of the barring gene. But you only need one copy of the barring gene for barring to show. A single barred rooster will only have a 50% chance of passing barring on to his offspring. Your rooster must have...
I think #1 and letter B are most likely pullets, nothing saying male to me on those two.
#6 I'm leaning pullet. The comb an wattles are awfully pink, but not as much as I would expect from a 9 week old single comb cockerel.
Letter C also has a very girly comb. But the uneven, kinda blotchy...
Went out to take care of the girls this morning and there was ice in the waterer. Time to winterize! We dropped a small tank de-icer in the waterer.
Last year Limu and (I think) Paprika had just a touch of frostbite on their combs. Not much, just the very tip on one or two points, but enough...
