    Broody makes it easy

This our first year raising chickens and I must say having a broody makes raising new born chicks a cinch. Our buff Orpington was not even a year old and she hatched 12 out of 15. It has been two weeks and they are all chipper and active. We lost half of our original batch by this time last...

    1st batch hatched!

Our broody hatched 12 out of 15 eggs. Today she led those rascals out if the nest. All appear vibrant and active. This being our first hatch I was thinking maybe we would get about 8. Needless to say I am impressed with our girl's first attempt.

    Gender confused rooster

We put out some new laying boxes for our girls. We put some hay, eggs, and golf balls in them. Our rooster hops up there and begins building a nest and is now sitting on the egg and golf ball. This happen to anyone else?

    Finally!

We got our first egg today. It was small but well formed. The good news is she had the egg in the nest box we provided for her.

    Chicken eats a snake

I have a cockerel that ate a baby snake. It might of been a copperhead. I did not get a good look at it. The only thing i saw was a pinkish belly. I do not have a problem with my birds eating snakes. My concern is if they eat a venomous snake, will the venom kill them?

    Bad rooster

I have a rooster that is pretty bold. He is quite the hunter of wasps at 8 weeks old. I am worried he is going to get a tattoo, leather jacket, and a motorcycle and do donuts in my yard. He is one bad boy.
