    Our Coop

Just before Thanksgiving, I posted in a panic about the smell in my henhouse. After getting tons of great advice about ventilation, we did some serious work, and now our coop is ready for the winter. I didn't take pictures of the actual ventilation holes that we added, but I took some pictures...

Too many chickens for my space

I haven't been around here since last spring when I hatched out some chicks and bought some chicks. Now, I have a great flock of chickens, but not enough space. Typical quandry for chicken lovers, I know! I think I have about 13 banty chickens, and 24? regular sized chickens, so almost 40...

HELP!! Two of my chickens got rained on, what do I do?

Hi, We had 2 chickens that were getting pecked by the others so we separated them into a different pen. Well, we forgot to cover them and they got totally rained on. We have brought them in the house in a dog crate lined with shredded paper and they are right next to the wood burning stove...

    Oh my, the DUST!

I don't think I'll use my house as the brooder area again. I can't believe the amount of dust this is creating. It's gross. The chicks are in a big box. I can't wait for them to be able to go outside. Kristy

Eggs in Bator that never hatched--what do you do with them?

Just wondering what I should do with the 9 eggs in the bator that never hatched. Do you open them and look what's inside? That sounds so disgusting to me. Or, do you just toss them in the trash? I have unplugged the bator. I'm done. It stinks and I'm not waiting on these eggs any longer...

Eggs drying out...What do I do??

Today is day 23 and there are still 2 eggs with pips, and one is zipped. Yesterday we had to help a zipped egg/chicken get out because it had been zipped for almost 2 days and wasn't making any progress. This chick was really dry and stuck to the shell, and even today, it's still not fluffing...

Chicks hatching early...when to take out of bator?

I have 24 eggs, and they started hatching on Day 19. Most of them are banties, which are the ones that have started to hatch already. I have 3 regular sized eggs and there is no pip or anything yet on those. When can I take my fuzzy butts out of the bator? I'm thinking they should come out...

    I HATE THIS INCUBATOR

I hate this stupid incubator that I borrowed. The temps keep fluctuating so much, I doubt anything is even still alive. We candled for day 14 about 2 days ago, and yesterday we found the bator at 94 degrees. We got it back to around 100, but then this morning when I woke up, it was like...

    Twin Chicks

Ok, from everything I've read, it seems like what she is doing is wrong. I thought you weren't really supposed to help the chicks out of the egg? I'm just curious what everyone thinks of this video. Kristy

    First time Incubating..regulating temperature

I have a borrowed LG incubator. I have had it plugged in for 2 days and the temp has hovered from 98-100 degrees. It is a still air incubator, and I can't get it to get any hotter inside. What do I do? I have been trying to find a consistent temperature in my house, but the basement is 52...

Winter Coop out of Straw Bales

I was reading an article today about chickens and it said to have your coop done, BEFORE you get your chickens. Well, that is not the case here, but I'm not worried so much for this spring and summer. I can fabricate something quickly for my babies that will arrive in April by the time they...

Hi everyone, I am going to ask for a favor! I am getting eggs shipped to me on Wednesday from California. When they arrive, I need to know WHAT TO DO NEXT!!! If anyone, or several of you would like to compile a simple step by step list of what I need to know about incubating eggs, I'd truly...

    How hard is Incubating eggs?

I"m reading these threads about incubating eggs and wondering how difficult it is? Does a good incubator keep the humidity and temperature right, or do I still have to adjust things? I know some of them turn the eggs. My friend has chickens (small bantams) and has fertilized eggs, and has an...

    What kind should I get?

Not sure if this is the right thread for this topic, but I'm hoping for some advice on what kinds of chickens to get. I think we can handle about 8-12 chicks right now, and I'm thinking about Rhode Island Red, Auracanas, Yellow Sex Linked (don't know the real name, but they are beautiful big...
