    Help me please...

I got a call from my neighbor requesting that I come remove a chicken form her backyard. I figures I could always use another one so I obliged her. Only problem is I have no idea what breed it is. Judging by the size it has to be a bantam (It is barely a quarter the size of my california white I...

    just a quick question.....

I have a black sex link that has been laying for about two weeks. Since she started she has only skipped one day. Also, she has given us more double yokers then single yokers. in fact, her last four have all benn double yokers. Is this normal, or are we just lucky?

    I couldn't be more happy!

My black sex-link started laying four days ago and we have gotten an egg every day like clock work. Today she layed the first "normal size egg" and it was a double yoker. It tasted sooooo gooooooodddddd.

    Wooooohooooooo!!!!!!!

I can't believe it. I went out to the coop this morning and lo and behold there was a little brown egg waiting for me. The best part is that she even managed to lay her first egg in the nest box where they belong. I am pretty sure it is my black sex-link because she is the only one sqautting...

    Waiting for eggs

Well, my oldest girls are about 15 weeks old now. Two of the eight (my black sex-link, and one of the rhode island reds) have really developed very red combs, faces and wattles. I know that this is a sign that they are maturing to egg laying stage, my question is how soon does it happen. Will it...

    Speckledhen I Need Your Help

I have someone coming to pick up my little barred cochin bantam rooster to take to their farm because I can't keep him in the city. I am beginning to wonder whether or not my other full size barred rock is a pullett or a roo. I don't know the exact age of either of them, but i bought them on may...

    Broccoli

I have been pulling up my broccoli plants now that I have harvested the broccoli off of them, and I put the entire plant, roots and all in my run and let the girls go at it. They make really quick work of it, in fact I think that broccoli leaves are there favorite thing in the entire world. I...

    Rooster Crowing

Well, it has happened. My rooster has started to crow. We live in an urban environment, and it is probably time to find him a new home. I have a question though. He doesn't start to crow until about 8 o clock in the morning. Is that because it stays dark enough in my coop that he doesn't know it...

    Nest boxes

I created my coop with external nest boxes. However, I didn't extend the roof out over the nest boxes so nowe whenever it rains, I get a lot of water in the nest boxes. Is there a way to cover the gap where the lid hinges up so that water can't run into it

    Broken beak

I was just out giving my 13 week old pulletts some snacks, and I noticed that one of them has a broken beak. It looks like the first 1/4 of an inch has just snapped of her top beak. Is this something I need to be worried about?

Look who is top bird now

So, after my two baby chicks first whole day with the 13 weekers, I went out to see how the sleeping arrangements went and this is what I found. I guess they figured out that if they were the first ones in the coop that they got choice of roosts. It is the absolute highest place you can get...

    looking for opinions

Hey everyone. When i went down to the feed store and ended up bringing home two new chicks, I used the length of the tail feathers to kinda guess on which were pullets and which weren't. Well, I scored a 50% I got one roo and one pullett. The pullett is a Barred Rock, and the Roo is a barred...

    A few random thoughts from a semi-newbie

Well, we are at week thirteen with our first chickens, and we have yet to loose one. (knock on wood) they seem to be really healthy, and enjoy the coop and the run. I have read on here that morning glory can be toxic, and I accidentally threw some in the run with some other weeds. By the time I...

Please tell me they will be okay!!!!!

Well, when I got my chickens about 13 weeks ago, my younger brother decided to get some as well. Because I got my coop finished before he did, I brooded and cared for all the chicks until his coop was finished, at which point he took five of the fifteen over to his house. Well, he has been in...

    New chicks

So, I went to pick up some feed, and eneded up bringing home two new chicks. They are supposed to be a barred rock and a black silkie bantam. They were sold straight run, and so after reading on here, I chose the two that had the MOST tail feathers. that was before I new about sexing by head...

    Feed Store

So i went to the feed store to get some grower for my 9 12 week olds and I came home with these. Aren't they cute. My first 9 chicks were RIR, and gold and black sex links. These two are a Barred rock and a Black silkie. I just couldn't resist getting myself a birthday present. You can see that...

HELP!! is this a cockerel or a pullett?

Hi, first time chicken owner. We bought "pullets" from a feed store here in Salt Lake, and I am a little worried that we may have gotten a couple cockerels. I know that sexing isn't an exact science, and that even though they listed them as pullets that there is a chance that some are roosters...

    New Coop

Hey. First time (Urban) chicken owner. I just finished my coop, and while there are still some things that need to be done, I think it turned out alright. It still needs to be painted, and needs some trim, but all in due time. We really enjoy having the birds. The kids love them, and it really...
