Will male Coturnix quail crow louder in the presence of other males?

I want to raise groups of breeding Coturnix quail adjacent to each other. Will the male quail crow louder in front of each other? I am mainly raising the quail because they are quiet so minimal noise would be nice, haha. TIA! :)

    Best hygrometer?

Hi! I've found a thermometer for my incubating purposes, the Brinsea thermometer, but I can't find a highly recommended hygrometer. Wet bulb thermometers also confuse me too much. What do yall recommend? I will be incubating quail for now, if it matters. Thank you! :)

What are the best coyote deterrents?

I planned on fencing my yard with hot wire, but my city doesn't allow electric fencing. :barnie What are the best coyote deterrents that you know of besides an electric fence? (Other than installing wire into the ground to prevent digging. Soil doesn't allow for that :() Thanks!!

    DIY Hova Bator Fan?

Hi! I have a hova-bator that I bought without a fan so I could add a fan on my own. The Hova-Bator fan is just too expensive for me at 30 bucks, lol. Some questions of mine: Does anyone have simple, step-by-step instructions and tips for installing a DIY fan into a hova bator? What kinds of...

    Electric Fence Energizers

I'm going to set up an electric fence around my yard to protect my quail against coyotes, neighborhood dogs, cats, raccoons, and what have you. My yard isn't too large at about 2000 sq ft or so. I don't know what to get for the energizer. Should I get the 0.1 Joule or 0.2 Joule charger? The 0.1...

    Shetland Geese Questions

I'm a sucker for rare breeds and found the interesting Shetland Geese! Does anyone raise Shetlands? Breeders? Everything I found on the Internet regarding Shetland Geese have been from years back, whether it be on this forum or other places. :( According to my research, they're rather small at...

Will Coturnix quails use nest boxes?

I read that people slant the bottoms of wire cages for eggs to roll out from under, but I'm going to be putting my quails in tractors and runs on grass. Then I read that quail lay everywhere, but then some use nesting boxes. I'm honestly not sure what to believe in. I'd really like to build a...

Do quail scratch and destroy backyards like chickens do?

So, I've been starting to work on the run and housing for my future quail. I would like to raise them on grass, but I'm not sure if they would scratch up my yard like chickens would. A person I know has a dust bowl of a yard after raising chickens!! What have your experiences with quail on...

How long can I leave an incubator unsupervised?

It sounds like a stupid question, and it probably is, but I'm pretty desperate! I ordered hatching quail eggs but due to some general issues, the eggs are coming later than I expected. Twelve days after the eggs arrive, I have to go somewhere for three days. I can't change this trip at all. :/...

    Goose down??

I always read that Embden geese are the best for goose down production. Why is that? Is it because they have the best down compared to other geese? How superior is it? Is down from other breeds of geese worth it in comparison to the Embden? Such as African, Chinese, etc.

    What breeds have protective roosters?

I know that Wyandottes and Rhode Island Reds are said to be good roosters, but what other breeds are there, known for caring for their girls? I also want a larger sized rooster, such as a Jersey Giant or a Turken (I love how Turkens look, to be honest haha), but I haven't heard anything about...

    How many chickens?

I'd like to keep my 2000 sq ft backyard from becoming a dust bowl due to chicken damage, but I've heard that with right management, this is possible. How many chickens can I raise? I would like to raise four or five hens with a rooster (with another five or six ducks and maybe a pair of geese --...

Will drakes fight for their hens?

I read that drakes will run for cover like any other hen, and won't protect their flock. However, some say that they're great at protecting their hens like a good rooster? I know that geese are good at caring for their mates, though. Will drakes do the same and keep his girls safe?

Rental home and backyard poultry experiences?

*I am SO SORRY if I posted this in the wrong section!! I'll try and move it elsewhere... I'm living in a rental home and my dream has always been raising something in my backyard -- whether that be chickens, ducks, or geese. But I want to know if this is even common or feasible. What has...

    Some duck questions! :)

I'm planning on getting some ducks in the, hopefully close(!), future. I would like some ducks for eggs! ^o^ My backyard is about 1000 or so square feet. Grass is pretty abundant here and there is only a week of snow where I currently am. It does rain a bit, though! (I am currently in the...

Super African vs African @ Metzer's Farms

Hi! I was looking at Super African and African geese on Metzer's Farms website, but I can't really tell the difference. It just seems that the African is lighter and a better forager, while the Super African is a show version? I won't be getting any geese right NOW, but I'd like to know for...

    Butchering smell?

Hi! I am interested in raising chickens, but my mother grew up on a farm and her childhood is filled with home grown and butchered chicken. She says that the scalding of the chicken reeks! Now, it is my father that's the problem. He used to eat pork as a child, but he saw a pig eating a pile...

    Chickens in California

**On mobile, please excuse my english. I live in Southern California with the coldest being about 40 F and the warmest 102 F. I'm looking for dual purpose plus looking for one breed to keep things simple. I won't be tracking breeds, keeping them separately, etc. It's one piece of land that they...

    Flighted?

I don't know where to post this, and I hope I'm doing this right...I don't mean to offend anyone. Should I keep my geese flighted? They'll be more livestock than pets, and I was thinking that I could keep them flighted. They'll be free ranging and have their own pond (I'm working things out). I...
