My EE hen decided she knew better and started to brood again (for the 4 time since her last hatch. On 2/5/12 she sat w/ such determination I said ok to it. Well I saw pips and the line thingy. Happy day!!! tomorrow's my birthday... and what a special gift.
5 EE, 3 Barrnies, 2 EF.... the...
Can turkeys get too cold??? It's 12: w/ up coming winds @40 to 50 mph. They have a 3sided enclosure but insist on roosting high enough to peek out the top...
I'm in Bellingham Wa close to the boarder , several of my ladies wanted to brood. I kept swiping their eggs until today. I decided to let the BO "Gurty" do her thing. My ???'s is this to early We're staying in the upper 30's to lower 50's. BUT the only thing we know about the weather is that IT...
I just opened a letter from my dad. He asked me not to come this fall for a visit and to help clean and cook. His reasons are so justified , mom has mid stage alzheimer's, and the cost is crazy. I don't blame him as any visitors makes his job harder. My sis and nephew went down this summer and...
Today my 43 girlies went down to 40.... My GS's school (Waldorf's kinderhouse in Seattle) was in need of chicken replacements. Last spring they were given 3 chicks, and the chicks had to be fostered over the summer. Well the foster family just couldn't give them up. Which is so understandable...
My 2 SS are so polite... When they lay in the corner, where I can't reach to collect them... they roll them out from under the other nest. I only have 6 nest w/ 43 hens. The newbies are now laying and this weekend is construction of several more... but in the mean-time those darlings are saving...
My almost 4 month RP toms are charging me. They (2) get all puffed up and one in particular rubs his head against his chest feathers and keeps approaching... to were I retreat. DH made a padded bamboo stick for me, But I want it to stop. I let them out of their coop so they can free range in our...
I have been watching my new little ladies start to lay. They lay in the run and on the coop floor and EVEN in the nests. We added 30+ chicks to our 14 laying hens. All are coming into their laying at their own pace. It's all good. My little IB has been setting in the nest every so often to no...
I did help my dad w/ turkeys a hundred years ago... But never in charge. I have 2 royal palms and one black. They are 3 ish months old. How do I know if they are male or female. When do they start to lay. One royal palm seems to be doing some romancing w/ no response from the others. The RP's...
Every time the EE roo tries to do his duty... my GLW either comes to the front of the hen and pecks @ her head OR goes to the back and pecks... well you know where. Lacy is the top hen and my only roo is almost 5 months old. He is trying his best but keeps getting interrupted, and the poor hen...
Relentless because every time I put my done broody hen back in the big girls coop... the other hens keep attacking her. I put Olivia in the coop each night after the everyone has roosted. In the morning I have to rescue her because they won't let her near the food or water. She will run along...
I'm trying to integrate 4 hatchery chicks w/ mama and 4 of her cross babies. All the same age (close to 8 weeks). Mama went w/ the big girls and was so to desperate to get back to babies she flew up to the roof of the coop several times. So she wouldn't hurt herself I put her back w/ all 8...
We're making the switch tonight. The 4 EE chicks are 7 weeks... They will share a grow coop w/ 4 BR cross that mama Olivia hatched, 7 weeks ago. Mama will go back to the big girls coop... and then I'll get the 4 brooders full of 26 other chick and 3 new turkeys... settled with a little more...
The problem the broody mama's chicks are kind of bullies. The hatchery chicks are "sheltered" and know nothing about the outdoors. All chick in this grouping are 6+ wks old and almost totally feathered.
What I did was put the mama and her 4 chicks to free range in our little back yard...
My GS are here for 2 wks and we thought we'd have a party to share our chick JOY with others. My primary kids and their siblings came (15 in all) and their parents (7). I had 2 of our young women friends (12y/o) teach simple concepts to the kids. They got to hold the older chicks and watch the 3...
My Olivia was let out of broody coop to free range w/ her 4 babies. SOMEHOW the big girls run door flew open A N D all H_ll broke lose' She(Olivia) was whamping on everyone. The babies were screaming and running all over... Earl our roo was absolutely paralyzed w/ fear and I was also screaming...
Not my house but the downtown feed and seed. The whole block was blacked out... I was going to pick up the BA's today... I peeked in the window and I think they took them home. Hope so
Talk about anti cla..............
My EE Mama taught all 4 babies to get on a 2 ft high roost. They are in the outside toddler coop. Pretty cool, I wish the indoor babies had her example . Does anyone else WONDER @ Mother Nature
and how WE can't seem to duplicate it !!!!
I had to upgrade my 3 wk old toddler EE into the middle brooder. They were cramped .... and I wanted to get the infant brooder ready for the next batch Wellies and Norweigan Jaerhon's and the list goes on....
